On the 8th June we have 2 rides planned. A 3.5 hour ride to South Norwood Country Park with a 9.30 start and a shorter 2.5 hour ride looking at views of the Central London skyline with the usual 10am start.
Simon S. leading with a 10am start at Peckham Square, next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, SE15 5RY. 19km (11.5 mile) route: Peckham - Dawson's Heights - Blythe Hill - Telegraph Hill – Peckham. Coffee in Ladywell Fields. There are 3 significant hills to get to the viewpoints and a total of 184 m ascending which is more than we usually do. Mostly quiet streets, bits of path in parks and a section of Nat Route 21. Estimated time is 2.5 hours but this depends on hill speeds, time viewing, and coffee. So although we hope to get back to Peckham at 12.30, we could be a bit later.  However we did it on time last year, see report here. Route map attached.

Start/finish Dulwich Clock Café, Dulwich Park, 9.30am. NOTE EARLY START. Ride starts by heading to Peckham Rye Park where you can also join the ride at 9.50am at The Round café on Strakers Rd. Continue to the Waterlink Way (Nat Route 21) at Ladywell Fields. Long traffic free section sto Bells Green where we turn off NR21 and follow quiet streets to Beckenham Place Park. On via Cator Park and Kent House.  Then via the useful cycle track at the A234 and through to Elmers End Rd and the entrance to South Norwood Country Park.  Circuit of the park including viewing the lake and stopping briefly at the south end to watch the trams.  Exit back to Elmers End Rd and quiet streets through Penge to Crystal Palace Park. Coffee and loo break at the Brown and Green LIFE Cafe.  Short diversion to the dinosaurs then up the hill through the park followed by the lovely long downhill run back to Dulwich Park and for some on to Peckham Rye Park. Bruce leading. 16 miles, route at https://bit.ly/2IWt2NC  and gpx file attached.  We last did this ride in July 2022 in beautiful weather – hope we get that this time (report here).
Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Same for “adults at risk”.

    • Hello! We are relocating abroad and so will be withdrawing our two children (ages 4 and 6) from St Dunstan’s College (Catford). If any family is considering enrolling children of a similar age, now would be an excellent opportunity—we’re required to pay full‑term fees unless the places are taken. Please get in touch if you’re interested or know someone who might be. Thank you!

    • Thanks for your reply. I’ve subscribed to Ancestry a few times in the past but felt I wasn’t using it enough to warrant keeping up the subscription.
    • Hi, I saw your post and just wanted to say that the incident you’re referring to did happen in the late 1980s at Dawson’s Heights. The person involved was named Carl Salawa, and he had just turned 18 years old at the time. Like you, I haven’t been able to find any news articles or official reports about it, If anyone remembers anything more about that time or incident, I’d really appreciate hearing about it. Thanks for sharing what you were told—it means a lot to know others remember.
