On the 15th June we have 2 rides planned, one long and one short. Long ride will head northeast to Waltham Forest while the short ride will be a more local ride looking at Hawksmoor Churches. Both rides will start from London Bridge at the early time of 9.30.

NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below.

Ride 1.  Five Hawksmoor Churches.  < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/five-hawksmoor-churches-cycle-ride-tickets-922410172657 >  Nicholas Hawksmoor was a contemporary of Christopher Wren and worked with Wren on several major buildings including St Pauls. Later in his career he designed and supervised the building of several major projects. The best known are his London churches and the ride will visit 5 of them. 9.30 start (NOTE - EARLIER THAN USUAL) from the Needle, south side of London Bridge, Ride will visit St. Mary Woolnoth (Lombard St), Christ Church, Spitalfields, St. George in the East (Wapping), St Anne’s Limehouse and St. Alfege’s Church (Greenwich). With a coffee break expect to finish at St Alfege’s at 12 noon. For riders wishing to return to London Bridge we will lead a ride getting there around 12.30.  Ride Leader, Nigel J,  Route (with info about each church) at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1b7x8MnovgoVZ4KAZ2K58Ts2PhTlKPY0&usp=sharing

A ride to explore the much-praised cycle infrastructure in Waltham Forest, often called "Mini-Holland". There are excellent cycle tracks, lovely neighbourhoods without through traffic (aka LTNs) and safe junctions. Just what we need in Southwark – and everywhere!
Simon Saville leading - 9.30am start from Southwark Gateway Needle, London Bridge. Hope to be back at 1.30pm, but it will depend on how many stops we make  Out past Bank and Moorgate, Columbia Road Market, Hackney City Farm, over the Regent's Canal and past London Fields (start of the Dunwich Dynamo in a month's time), Hackney Church and Millfields Park to Lea Bridge Road. Then a tour of Walthamstow and Leyton - including a break for refreshments, probably in Orford Road. Back through the Olympic Park (past the Velodrome), through Vicky Park and Mile End Park and along Mile End Road on C2. Jump across to C3 and avoid Tower Bridge by continuing to The Monument and back over London Bridge. This is a lovely ride, one that takes in roads that we don't often use - with lots of interest. About 33km (20.5 miles), and mainly flat. Google Map of route: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1q6vWyaqw0XsZcYVHAUytyRz2w6EhNqI&usp=sharing

Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Same for “adults at risk”.

This ride is part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/

    • There is no law about what people must wear when cycling. I think they should wear what ever they feel comfortable in. You shouldn't have to wear 'special clothes' in order to use a bicycle (or to walk or drive). There are laws about lights. I agree that people should have lights on at night.  There are invisible cyclists? 🤣
    • Cyclists who chose not to follow advice, guidance or rules specific to visability in poor light conditions choose the risks they run and I see no reason for sympathy when their luck runs out. However, I do feel sympathy both for pedestrians hit by invisible cyclists, and obviously those with visual or hearing impairment which adds to their risk on the pavements or road, and to drivers who may hit these invisible cyclists and suffer guilt or trauma having done so. And anyone who wishes to suggest that a cyclist so hit is not to blame because it's always the drivers fault can go hang.  Why do you think the rules and guidance exist in the first place?
    • You are again misinformed. The Highway Code is also clear about clothing.   It is here. Section 59 Section 59 of the Highway Code explains the appropriate clothing cyclists should wear in order to make it easier for other road users to spot them and help to keep them protected in the case of a collision. Cyclist clothing: Helmet – Your cycle helmet should conform to the current regulations, be the correct size for your head and be securely fastened. Appropriate fitted clothing – Your clothing should be tight fitted to prevent it getting tangled in the chain or wheel of your bicycle. Light clothing – Light and fluorescent clothing will help you to stand out in daylight and poor light. Reflective accessories – Strips on the helmet, as well as armbands and ankle bands will help you be seen in the dark. and  Section 60 This section of the Highway Code is all about cyclists’ lights and reflectors. At night cyclists must have their white front and red rear lights lit. Their bicycles must also be fitted with a red rear reflector and amber pedal reflectors. White front reflectors and spoke reflectors can also increase your visibility to other road users. Flashing lights are permitted but cyclists riding in areas without street lighting should use a steady front lamp instead.
