free sociable cycle rides Sat June 29th (one short and easy, the other less so)

Recommended Posts

On the 29th June we have two very different rides, one a short , easy loop along the Thames, the other an all day outing to Richmond Park.
NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below.
A favourite short ride, this anti-clockwise loop follows the Thames on both banks. Lots of history and always something new to see. 10am to 12.30pm. Start/finish Deal Porter Square, opposite Canada Water Station, SE16 7AR. Easy 11 mile ride using DLR to cross river at Greenwich (travel pass or equivalent needed) and returning over London Bridge.  Route includes Russia Woodland, Greenland Dock, Deptford Historic Waterfront, Narrow St (Wapping), Shadwell Basin, Canal-side paths to St Katherines and the Monument. Coffee stop on return leg (probably Bartons, Dockhead). No hills, mostly off road, cycle lanes or quiet streets. Simon K. leading.  It will be possible to join the ride at Greenwich Station. Meet 10.25am outside the front of the station on Greenwich High Rd, near the Novotel (not by the DLR entrance). Please indicate on the registration form that you will be joining at Greenwich. Ride 2. Waterloo to Richmond Park and Twickenham.  < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/waterloo-to-twickenham-cycle-ride-tickets-930112179567 >
Ride details from Ride leader Jamie in his inimitable style. Note early 9.30 start time.
Mission To cycle from Waterloo Station to Richmond Park, Richmond Bridge, Marble Hill, Eel Pie Island and Twickenham Station from where we will catch a train back to Waterloo Station.
Coordinating Instructions and Timings  Riders will meet at 9.30am on Saturday 29th June 2024 outside and under the Waterloo Station Victory Arch that is 50 yards up on the right from where York Road meets Mepham Street and Cab Road. A short safety brief will be given at the meeting RV point before departing. We envisage being back at Waterloo by approximately 3pm trains permitting.
Route This is a relaxed and social ride that involves some very enjoyable cycling in stages for about 20 miles. Much of our route is on quiet, vehicle-free roads with some use of riverside paths.
Checks and Equipment Riders are advised to pre-check their bikes before the ride. ABC bike safety checks. Air/Brakes/Chain/Drive. Also check for play in wheels. Riders are further advised to bring: - a warm fleece, waterproofs, puncture canister, bike lock, bike pump and water bottle.
Rations and Water There will be a coffee stop and we will lunch at Pembroke Lodge Café in Richmond Park. Riders are also welcome to bring their own picnic lunch/snack should they wish.
Contact Please feel free to contact me with any queries regarding this event on 07976 803741 or at [email protected]
Note from Rides Coordinator: this is a long ride and will include some towpath. Riders need to be experienced enough to cope,

    • I think part of the problem may be that if you are a cyclist and  can see cars and pedestrians after dark, e.g. lit by streetlights and headlights, you don't realise that they can't see you when your bike has no lights and you are dressed in dark non reflective clothing. The other part of the problem may be that you just don't care, of course. ETA: Do Lime bikes not have lights?
    • It was normal cyclists, in rush hour traffic, in the dark, in the rain. Just really want people to realise it’s that time of year even more careful and to get kitted out.
    • The other consideration is that users of Lime bikes and similar, plus younger pedal cyclists, probably don't view themselves as 'cyclists' as such and so don't get kitted out or even consider that they need to. I also agree that earlier nights are another factor for the casual or hire bike user more used to cycling in the summer. I don't think I have ever seen a hire bike or scooter user wearing a helmet or reflective gear- presumably that is because the bike is just viewed as a transport tool for short term use and users do not want to be encumbered by any of the safety gear? Before anyone jumps on me for anecdotal evidence and speculation, this is just what I have seen round here, there may be hordes of similar users elsewhere that are kitted out.
