two free sociable cycle rides Sat July 27th, one long, one short

Recommended Posts

NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below.

On the 27th July we have two rides, very different in character.  One is a new circular version of Jamie’s “Awayday” to Kent. The other is Bruce’s annual “Big Butterfly Count” local short ride

July 27th, Ride 1, Circular ride from Faversham via Whitstable and Canterbury     < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/circular-cycle-ride-from-faversham-via-whitstable-and-canterbury-tickets-950066222647   >
30 mile ride starting 10am at Faversham Station and finishing back there at around 4:30pm. This is a much longer ride than our usual pattern and involves some off-road unsurfaced paths. Read the detailed instructions in the attached document. Only attempt this ride if you and your bike are in condition to complete it.  If in doubt, feel free to contact Jamie and discuss it (contact details in attached doc).
Our annual search for butterflies in Southwark and Lambeth to coincide with the national Big Butterfly Count.  10 mile loop starting from Dulwich Park Café (middle of the park) at 10am with Bruce leading. Hope to visit Green Dale Fields, Ruskin Park, Elam St Open space, Myatts Fields, Burgess Park and Peckham Rye Park. Back to Dulwich about 12.30. Hope for sunny weather. Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”.
This ride is part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/
Note. Ride reports, often with photos and route maps, are posted to the Southwark Cyclists web site, yearly index at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/

    • I think part of the problem may be that if you are a cyclist and  can see cars and pedestrians after dark, e.g. lit by streetlights and headlights, you don't realise that they can't see you when your bike has no lights and you are dressed in dark non reflective clothing. The other part of the problem may be that you just don't care, of course. ETA: Do Lime bikes not have lights?
    • It was normal cyclists, in rush hour traffic, in the dark, in the rain. Just really want people to realise it’s that time of year even more careful and to get kitted out.
    • The other consideration is that users of Lime bikes and similar, plus younger pedal cyclists, probably don't view themselves as 'cyclists' as such and so don't get kitted out or even consider that they need to. I also agree that earlier nights are another factor for the casual or hire bike user more used to cycling in the summer. I don't think I have ever seen a hire bike or scooter user wearing a helmet or reflective gear- presumably that is because the bike is just viewed as a transport tool for short term use and users do not want to be encumbered by any of the safety gear? Before anyone jumps on me for anecdotal evidence and speculation, this is just what I have seen round here, there may be hordes of similar users elsewhere that are kitted out.
