come to a singaround (you don’t have to sing) Check out the goose is out or Dulwich folk - both friendly local groups.

join the Dulwich Society/ Dulwich U3A?

Church groups - there is a men’s group at St Barnabas.

Not sure if there is a male equivalent of the WI…

Ah! An opportunity to promote our Singarounds!

Second Sunday of the month at The Ivy House in Stuart Road,  Nunhead, London's first community owned pub and a lovely friendly space with all ages.

Check out the FAQ section of our website for lots more info (you don't have to sing, but if you do want to, anything goes - no restrictions at all, except no very very long songs)

Don't be put off by the fact that we are a "folk club" - our Singarounds are different every time, depending on who turns up, but there is usually a great mixture of genres, although often people do sing "folk" songs.

It isn't an open mic - we don't use the stage, and we don't use mics.

People mingle before it starts, at the breaks and at the end. You would soon get to know people.

There are all ages, from very young (over 18 though after 8pm!) to very old  (over 80!), though the mix on any particular night again depends on who turns up.

The 484 bus goes from Goose Green to the end of Stuart Road, or it's a nice walk through Peckham Rye park, at least  in the daylight hours!

I did wonder if the original post was a joke, given the reference to discussing "interesting things" without giving any clue as to what his interests actually were ....

Maybe he is just sitting back and quietly laughing at the responses 😥

Sorry, somehow my post above was duplicated instead of being merged with this one, and I can't delete all of the duplicated bits.

Many moons ago, we used to have fairly regular "Forum Drinks", where forum members could meet up and get to know each other in real life.

We met in a different local pub each time, and sometimes had sticky labels with our forum names on.

A lot of those original people have moved away, but it has occasionally crossed my mind that it would be nice to start that up again and be able to put more faces to names (not that I ever remember either faces OR names) 

Or maybe it is still happening but I'm kept out of the loop 🤣 

Many of those pubs we used to go to have now changed out of all recognition, of course. Also there seem to be more families with young children in the area, for whom evening drinks would be difficult.

I don't have time to do it, but if anybody else was up for organising it I'd be happy to help.

It mainly involves deciding on a date, I imagine trying to get a rough idea of how many people would be interested,  and then booking a suitable sized space in a local pub and telling people about it on here 

I don't know how it was arranged before, but maybe some of the longer standing forum users may know. I just used to turn up!

Hello yes I am listening and many thanks for the suggestions. No the post was not a joke very far from. I have many interests but to be honest interested in talking about most things.

i like current affairs, music, theatre, cricket, architecture and people mostly. 
 

I moved yesterday and sorry for failing to respond.

would like to set up a group.

When you say you would like to set up a group, do you mean a specific interest group, or resurrect the forum drinks?

Whatever, possibly a first step would be to start a new thread on here putting forward your idea, to see how many people would be interested?

In 2008 my partner Nygel and I did that, to see if anybody would be interested in coming to a local folk club if we set one up.

Luckily, some people were! And we met with them in a local pub to discuss ideas! 

Sixteen years, a very steep learning curve and several venues later, with many twists and turns along the way, a lot of hard work,  and help from a lot of lovely people, we are still running it. And now there is another folk club (not ours)  just up the road!

So anyway, great oaks from little acorns (aka a post on here) grow! Or something.

PS Hope your move went well and you are settling in!

      People working in shops should not be "attempting to do the bill in their head." Nor if questioned should they be  trying to "get to an agreeable number." They should be actually (not trying to) getting to the correct number. I'm afraid in many cases it is clearly more than incorrect arithmetic. One New Year's Eve in a restaurant (not in East Dulwich but quite near it) two of us were charged for thirty poppadoms. We were quite merry when the bill came, but not so merry as to not notice something amiss. Unfortunately we have had similar things happen in a well established East Dulwich restaurant we no longer use. There is also a shop in East Dulwich which is open late at night. It used not to display prices on its goods (that may have changed). On querying the bill, we several times found a mistake had been made. Once we were charged twice for the same goods. There is a limit to how many times you can accept a "mistake".  There is also a limit to how many times you can accept the "friendly" sweet talking after it.

      Adapted not forced.  As have numerous species around the world.  Sort of thing that Attenborough features.  Domestic dogs another good example - hung around communities for food and then we become the leader of the pack.  Not sure how long it will take foxes to domesticate, but some will be well on their way.    Raccoons also on the way https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1j8j48e5z2o

      My memory, admittedly not very reliable these days, places the shop on the block on the left hand side just before Burgess Park going towards Camberwell. Have also found a reference to Franklins Antiques being located at 157 Camberwell Road which is on that block. This is a screen shot obtained from Google maps of that address which accords with my memory except the entrance door was on the right hand side, where the grey door is, rather than in the centre.
