On the 5th Oct we have 2 rides, Eva leading round the 2024 City Sculptures and Bruce with a longish new train assisted route.

This ride aims to visit all 17 sculptures exhibited as part of the 13th Sculpture in the City event. Some sculptures on show will be familiar to riders who participated in the similar ride led by Eva in 2022 (https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2022/healthy-ride-reports-august-6th-2022/), but there are some new ones as well. Detailed descriptions of the artworks are published here:  https://www.sculptureinthecity.org.uk/artwork/13th-edition/. This flat 7 mile ride will start and end in Deal Porter Square, next to Canada Water Library and opposite Canada Water Station. Start time 10am and expected to last 2.5 hours.  Proposed route:

Bromley and Orpington < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/southwark-healthy-ride-to-bromley-and-orpington-tickets-1030924622297 >  An excursion not the outer suburbs with a return by train. Famous Bromley resident H.G. Wells once described it as a “morbid spread of population”. But are the outer suburbs that depressing? Time for us to venture forth and check things out for ourselves!
London Bridge (Southwark Gateway Needle) EARLY start (9am) for a 16 mile ride ending at Orpington Staton at around midday. Train back from there (5 per hour, 20-34min journey time). Bring travel card or equivalent,  Provisional route at https://www.komoot.com/tour/1883003409.

Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Same for “adults at risk”.
Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe (note there is a lot of shared path on these ride). If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. This ride is part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/

    • I think part of the problem may be that if you are a cyclist and  can see cars and pedestrians after dark, e.g. lit by streetlights and headlights, you don't realise that they can't see you when your bike has no lights and you are dressed in dark non reflective clothing. The other part of the problem may be that you just don't care, of course. ETA: Do Lime bikes not have lights?
    • It was normal cyclists, in rush hour traffic, in the dark, in the rain. Just really want people to realise it’s that time of year even more careful and to get kitted out.
    • The other consideration is that users of Lime bikes and similar, plus younger pedal cyclists, probably don't view themselves as 'cyclists' as such and so don't get kitted out or even consider that they need to. I also agree that earlier nights are another factor for the casual or hire bike user more used to cycling in the summer. I don't think I have ever seen a hire bike or scooter user wearing a helmet or reflective gear- presumably that is because the bike is just viewed as a transport tool for short term use and users do not want to be encumbered by any of the safety gear? Before anyone jumps on me for anecdotal evidence and speculation, this is just what I have seen round here, there may be hordes of similar users elsewhere that are kitted out.
