I'm thinking about wider society and also get more engagement from your MP.  But as regards to the Met you could contact the Commissioner but as others have said maybe best to start with the Safer Neighbourhood Team 

I've heard good things from those constuents with difficult issues when contacting Ellie.  My experience on more mundane transport issues it was all handled by her office, who did no better than me!  But she effectively a front bencher so has much on.

Annual outbreak - clocks going back + some teenage boy psychology that's beyond me.

Police work hasn't stopped entirely. SNT organised more patrols and visible presence until the group responsible was arrested.

When reported crime in an area starts to increase or peak, police resources are extracted from SNT teams in areas where crime is perceived to be lower and temporarily used to resolve the issue. 

Unfortunately with numbers so low at the moment it's not a great situation as it leaves other areas short and potentially vulnerable to other crimes. 

Public confidence in the police is low after incidents over the past few years, wages aren't great and recruitment isn't keeping up with attrition, therefore something has to change to get numbers back up and people feeling safe again. Equally the prison situation with early telease, shorter sentences or even some judges being lenient on low level crimes doesn't help either. 

A complex situation that has been caused by multiple factors all of which need attention and huge funding is only going to get worse before it gets better.

I guess I'm in the minority b/c i do not agree. This is why I used the topical example of the gaza protests but you can use any example: football matches, G7 summits.  There are TONS of cops, lots of cops, 10s of thousands of them in fact, there are just not enough on the beat in SE22 after school.

It's all about allocation: this is why the bare stats are important and it's on us to all be proactive and report everything.

But also, as someone said about meet and greets with local police, the influence and story telling re: our local situation is what makes the leap from just stats to actual, physical  allocation.

My area is DV and I've found both to be receptive on various issues like traffic and trees so worth a follow up regarding this incident and the wider issue around kid on kid muggings.

My daughter just hit the age to walk to/from school herself so I have lots of skin in the game and care deeply about every day safety for everyone.

It should always be reported to police. I'm always happy to criticise the Met - but my impression is that the Community Safety Teams (beat cops) have always been very responsive to this kind of issue. It is worth speaking to them as well as just 999/101.

Agree, plus always worth emailing local councillors if community police not helpful with offering advice and support.. tho my experience is community police are very understanding

Robbers on bikes and scooters is rife everywhere in London sadly. My advice to my son is keep off your phone, be aware of your surroundings, stay around people and well lit roads as much as possible, and if anyone asks for phone or money hand it over without a struggle. My friend's son was mugged outside Finsbury Park station and it terrified him, robber had a knife and said he knew where be lived. Scary stuff. Near my work in the west end phone theft is rife too. Especially now certain metals are more scarce I imagine there's a real market in phones being sold on.

Stay safe everyone and let's keep to practical solutions as building police presence back up will take years, so productive ideas such as more CCTV etc emailed to Ellie our local MP I feel would be far more constructive than posting critical political comments here.

I don't want to be negative, and maybe I've misunderstood the purpose of CCTV, but if it's supposed to be to identify people I'm not sure how it would help if the attackers are masked, unless there are other identifying features?

Post Boris the Conservatives aimed to raise the number of police but having paid some to retire early and paid redundancy that must have been a huge waste of public money, only to U turn..

Anyway here's hoping for more and better community policing, especially at times when crime is higher such as just after school finishes.

CCTV is a known deterrent. Police have mentioned that many times when we or neighbours and friends have been victims of crime. Even disguised criminals can be tracked that way.

I believe they can enhance the CCTV footage with facial recognition software. Whether they deploy that for a local mugging is anyone's guess, but it's captured in news articles they use it at airports, demonstrations and football matches.

Be nice if they compelled the person they caught to make some sort of restitution to the victim.

One day last week I saw a bunch of guys in orange hi viz vests in Dulwich Park cleaning up leaves - the vests had Community Payback (or something similar, can't remember exaclty) written on the back.

On 1 hand I was like "that's good" but on the other hand I thought the slogan on the back was a bit demeaning.  In my mind, the fear of god to make you rethink your life choices should be inculcated during the police/charging/judicial process where what you once thought was just a harmless mugging/shoplifting/vandalism etc. is in fact wrong and taken seriously by experienced professionals who are there to clamp down on these things.  That should be what's in the forefront of a person's mind -- not "oh no I might have to wear that hi viz vest again"....

These two animals rode past me on Lordship Lane, at high speed on the path, all in black on black bikes. I next saw them inside Sainsbury's riding their bikes up the aisles laughing before taking off towards the park. Their intent was clear. My wife tried to excuse them saying that they are probably being pressured by criminal gangs but it looked to me like they were enjoying themselves too much

Can you clarify please.  Did you attach a photograph to your post?  On what date, and at what time, both in Lordship Lane, and inside Sainsburys (presumably the DKH one?), did you see them?  What was their intent in Sainsburys?

More interestingly how did the security staff react/do, staff would have also been concerned for their safety with individuals riding through the aisles, BUT on a more serious point, I really can't see how they'd have got through the recently installed "fence" and gate once just through the glass entrance doors, unchallenged by security who stand close by at their podium. 

Riddle me that one.
