Hi,

Over the last few months, even though i phone is up to date with security, I am having several problems. The most frustrating  is going on long journeys by train and just not connecting or at best very patchy with free Wi-Fi - as on train. Apps especially train line just not connecting at all but strangely iPad works well. Been to Apple Shops - no help at all. Switched it off waited and switched on again - nothing..! Beginning to drive me abit insane and certain,y very grumpy! I am with id mobile and have been with them for years.

In despair bought an android phone and pay as you go with EE to test out before taking a contract - certainly much better all round but all my stuff is on iPhone and really don’t need to  take two phones out & about with me.

Are folk happy with EE? I won’t go near Virgin or Sky - had bad experience with both.

Do I need to add extra security to iPhone? Thought they were “King” of that side.

Something must be overlooked by me as aside from above seem to have regular scams a well

Can I take it somewhere reliable for someone to check my settings? Done all that and still having problems.

All helpful suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Have you talked to iD?

I've been with them for ages and have never had any problems.

They run  on 3's network.

But the WiFi isn't anything to do with your phone call provider, is it?

Have you tried asking  a (reputable) phone shop which isn't just Apple?

How old is the iPhone?

Not being funny, but if it's just train WiFi you have issues with, are you sure you are going through the correct process to connect with it on your phone?

I use the Oxford Tube (aka bus) WiFi quite a lot, and it can be confusing, plus they actually say that the connection may sometimes be iffy,  depending on circumstances. That is down to their WiFi, not your phone.

Could the same be happening on the trains?

Been with ID for years and thank you I do know how to access wi fi - and don’t have the problems I have been experiencing recently.

Even asked a young person today on the train and they could not understand it either.

No problem with my android phone at all - Well not to this level.

As an example, would not connect ie my iPhone at Waterloo Station today - had various staff members try - result had to pay for a return ticket on top of what I had already paid out!!

Sat in a Curry store, about 10 days ago and refused to move until they had sorted out the fact that ID had locked me out of the system. Did get it all sorted out and running via help from ID - they are an online company but Curry’s have, let’s call it a “hot line” to them. I have found a number as well on line - who knows if it works or not - I am classified as a vulnerable person, hate to have to use it as a way of getting a result.

No joy what so ever at the Apple Shop - couldn’t even get them to book an apt for me at their tech team for the same day - was prepared to wait a couple of hours but no, come back following day at blah time and noI did not use my disability to get more help.

Bus is fine, outside is patchy but so be it - just have to find a good spot, can connected to all free wi fi in Malls and pubs, cafe etc.

Please give me the name of a reputable phone shop, if you have one.

You seem to be having difficulties as well with your laptop/ computer etc

My phone is only 2 /3 years old..

Thanks for your comments and replying.

Sorry if I offended you. I was trying to be helpful.

I did not mean to imply you know nothing about WiFi, but I have found as I said that connecting away from home can sometimes be difficult, especially when travelling.

On at least one occasion I found that the reason I couldn't connect to the WiFi  was because I wasn't doing things correctly, and on  other occasions the problem was with the Oxford Tube WiFi.

If you can connect OK to free WiFi elsewhere, would that not seem to imply that the problem is specifically with the train and station WiFi?

So either there is something wrong at their end, or (if other people can connect to it at a time when you can't) something wrong at your end, which could be the phone, but why would it connect to free WiFi at other places but not on trains?

I don't have the name of a reputable phone shop, sorry.

What I actually meant by that was that I would avoid shops like the many small phone shops  in Peckham. I didn't particularly want to spell that out.

I'm sure some of them are fine, but my daughter had a phone battery replaced at one, and it failed very  shortly afterwards.

Unless you have a recommendation for an independent phone shop from a reliable source, I would stick to the major high street phone shops?

I am with iD. They have various ways to contact them, including online chat. I just had a look.

You say you are classified as a vulnerable person, and their website says they have special provisions for vulnerable people? There is a link on their website to find out more. I'm not sure why you would not want to use those provisions if they might get you help more quickly? I imagine that is what they are there for?

But to the best of my knowledge the WiFi problems you are having  would have nothing to do with  your phone call supplier? I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I only asked the phone's age in case that was a contributing factor. If it's only 2 or 3 years old, then of course it shouldn't be.

Yes I'm having problems with my laptop, but I'm not sure why that's relevant? I only bought it in May,  it's still under guarantee,  it developed a clear fault out of the blue,  it's been a pain, and I'm very grateful to the local people who have helped.

I never claimed to be any kind of technical expert, far far from it. I'm in my mid seventies and technology is a complete mystery to me 🤣

Anyway, again, I'm sorry if you were offended by anything I said, and I hope you will get things sorted out soon.

Just noticed you said you have "regular scams" as well. I think we all get those, at least I do!

You should be able to report the phone number as spam and also block the number (and similarly for emails) however sadly I think it's pretty impossible to get rid of them altogether.

I save the number in my contacts as spam, so if it should get through again it comes up marked as spam, and I just don't answer it.

If I get a call from a number I don't recognise I do usually answer it, as sometimes it's a genuine call, but if it's spam I just tell them to eff off (except I don't say eff) and then block the number.

Android phone with EE network on a £10/mo sub works fine for my needs ie. WhatsApp, plenty of data, calls and texts.

Can't comment on iPhone, Apple don't exist in my world. Security-wise I guess the nightmare is getting your phone nicked while it's in an unlocked state, or another thing they do is surreptitiously video you from a distance typing in the passcode then nick it. Banking on the phone sounds iffy too because the 2FA (2 factor authentication) is the phone itself, yeah right.

    • Sorry, not having a dig at Southwark for that.   I'm just shocked that next door they've chosen to abandon such an institutional community / family event so they can keep pumping out commercial stuff instead.   I suppose the same could happen here next although we don't really have any longstanding family events like that one.
    • No doubt the schools in Harrogate are being discussed on the East Harrogate Forum or whatever. Dulwich College is being discussed because it's local. Saying "ooh, there were loads of schools mentioned" is a bit dismissive. It was Dulwich College that referred sex abuse allegations about pupils to the police and Dulwich College that used the spectre of the police to suppress dissent. 🤔
    • Hi, I was just wondering what experiences any of you have had in relation to an Independent Panel review relating to the Permanent Exclusion of a SEN child. 1. General experience Any experiences, positive or negative, in general? 2. Clerks Associates UK Any experience of this entity acting as an "independent clerk" to an Independent Review Panel in a matter involving a Permanent Exclusion of a SEN pupil, also involving discrimination under the Equality Act 2010. There is limited publicly available information with regards to this "independent clerk"; however, I can see from their Annual Report & Accounts at Companies House that they are a small, privately owned organisation.   I am very concerned that there is a clear and material risk that they are highly dependent for their revenues and cash flow from the business that they receive from the school and its parent Trust (which has 9 schools in total under its management) who have appointed them. I also note that the Trust has a material employee relations dispute with their staff over underpayment of maternity pay whilst materially increasing the salaries of the highest paid Trust executives and other highly paid staff (presumably the Head Teachers). https://southwarknews.co.uk/news/community/teachers-at-six-charter-schools-walk-out-in-first-of-four-strike-days-planned-for-this-month/ Given the current situation, we have no choice but to engage in this process of an Independent Panel Review; however, we are concerned as to various elements including this one which is a key role in providing independence. 3. Independent SEN expert We have the right to an independent SEN expert to review the matter and provide their opinion to the Independent Review Panel. The concept is that this person is supposedly acting "independently" and also solely in respect of the SEN elements of the matter. We do not however know who this person is, their experience or level of independence. The last information that I can find in the public domain about the effectiveness of an Independent SEN expert is a UK govt report from 2014 which portrays a very mixed experience for parents. Hence, we are seeking to understand if anyone has any more recent experience of an Independent SEN expert in relation to an Independent Panel Review. Many thanks for any thoughts that you have based on your experience. For reasons of confidentiality, it is perhaps better to send any replies to me directly. Many thanks
