Surely for cultural reasons the best bagels are in the East End.  Although this random ranking, whilst having three in the East, does have one local to here!

TBH I don't think I have ever had a proper bagel.  I know the ones from the supermarkets come nowhere near.

Helps if I attach the review

The diaspora was largely forced out of the East End a long time ago. The historical antisemitism behind that that is repeating itself again now, very sadly.

What nonsense.  It's social mobility.  Huguenots moved to the East End and once they made a bob or two moved to more upmarket areas. Subsequently Jews.  Now Bangladeshi, particularly making a pretty penny once the hipsters moved in.

Antisemitism was a small factor and this was a generation or more ago.

"Jewish people moved out of London's East End between 1900 and the 1950s primarily to escape overcrowded, impoverished conditions and seek better housing and improved social standing in the suburbs."

I expect few of us living in the area have witnessed first hand antisemitism.  We may well have seen racism against black, brown people and maybe Eastern Europeans.  Anti Irish sentiment was still prevalent 30 years ago - partly due to the troubles but partly some British superiority complex encouraged by generations of lewd comedians,  Glad that is behind us now.

Why do you have to make such toxic comments?  You'd be better off doing some research and educating yourself.  Here's some reading: https://www.ideastore.co.uk/local-history/collections-and-digital-resources/user-guides/migration-and-communities-in-the-east-end

You don't have to thank me.

I won't thank you at all for posting such nonsense. Antisemitism is rife in London. Week after week for ell over two years people have been out on the street protesting Jews' rights to exist.

Jews have been driven out of this country before (as with other European countries) and have to fight very hard all the time to stop that happening again. It happened in East London too in the 1930s, as Hitler rose to prominence. 100,000 citizens of East London signed a petition to block the BUF march in Cable Street. Of course it was ignored and the fascists caused all sorts of chaos across the East End. At least back then the Independent Labour Party were on the right side of history and opposed the BUF march against the Jews. Many of them would be on the other side now supporting Fascism.

It's not toxic to state such facts. To flinch from the truth is toxic.

Having left the Labour Party when Keir Starmer kicked out Jeremy Corbyn for so-called anti-Semitism, unfortunately I've got no wish to read anything he has written on the matter.

Well, maybe you would like to read what the Equalities and Human Rights Commission had to say about antisemitism in the Labour Party when Jeremy Corbyn was in charge. https://www.equalityhumanrights.com/our-work/inquiries-and-investigations/antisemitism-labour-party/antisemitism-labour-party

It was the most shameful episode in the Labour Party's history.

Yes I will read it, but I still stand by what I said.

This thread is not the place to discuss it, but I'm happy to do so if you want to start a thread in the lounge.

How does your mind work? This is a thread about a bakery that may be opening.

Your grasp of history is extremely weak. Mosley’s fascists were opposed and defeated all over the east end, not with petitions either. The principal leadership in driving them back came from the Communist Party but it was a united, cross community movement.

The Daily Mail provided constant support for the British Union of Fascists and, along with sections of the Conservative Party, echoed their racist rhetoric. Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose. Excuse my French.

To characterise pro-Palestinian demonstrations attended by thousands of Jews among the hundreds of thousands of people from across British society as “protesting Jews’ rights to exist” or comparing them to Mosley’s blackshirts is frankly sickening. You should be utterly embarrassed and ashamed of yourself.

Majority of reported hate crime is based on ethnicity, brown, black and mixed heritage.

Religious hate crime is lower and most affects Muslims, Jews to a slightly lowers number and a small percentage of Hindus and Sikhs.

Real or perceived atrocities committed by Muslim extremists and the state of Israel will influence numbers

Anyone who has been to a protest against the war in Gaza will see mainly peaceful and good natured crowds including Jews against war.

@CPR Dave stop making a fool of yourself.

Corbyn cannot admit to being wrong.  He sprouted nonsense that Russia was not responsible for the Salisbury poisoning, would not be contrite about the accusations of anti-Semitism, and is partly to blame for Brexit.

He may be principled and a decent person but is not a Messiah and ran a poor campaign in the 2019 general election, a gift for Johnson.

I expect he would have been pants in dealing with COVID, and Johnson set a low bar.

I'm with Miss Jean Brody on the Spanish Civil War.  It maybe not!

E.g. see the Battle of Cable Street, 1936

Blimey, this has turned from celebrating a new and exciting Bagel business in East Dulwich to a Jeremy Corbyn experience very quickly.

Let's get back on point and welcome our soon to arrive business, I for one am looking forward to it.

    • Without doubt.. just seem to expect others or council to deal with it…no, don’t think it is that …just the fact that people these days are working hard, tired, stressed.. what were houses are now converted into flats…there is community spirit, well hope so.. neighbours hardly see one another, let alone know each other as work schedule is no longer 7/9 …only older more established people who have lived in area, and not making a quick buck, understand… people don’t even have the time to talk to neighbours unless annoyed or complaining.. when was the last time one smiled and said hello..or even started a conversation in a queue?
