Opening ceiling to the eaves

Recommended Posts

Hi, I’m thinking about removing the ceiling in our third floor room that’s at the back of a trad Victoria terrace, and installing a velux window. It has a very low ceiling, and the loft space over it is very small - about 3ft at the highest.

What tradesperson(s) might I need for the job? We’ll also have to rewire for spot lights, build in new carpentry, fit the window and I assume insulate. Will a structural engineer be needed? I suspect leaving the ceiling joists in place would be the simplest option?

Any advice would be appreciated or any recommendations for a trady that could do the job!

Dear Percy

As regards to your question as to whether you need a structural engineer, If you imagine a triangle, well the ceiling joist will act as a tie to stop the rafters spreading, as well as supporting the ceiling. However, this can be overcome by putting extra ties so you can have a clear ceiling line. Installing a Velux roof window, you will have to double up on your rafters to take the extra weight. Make sure you remove as much dust and debris as possible before laying it on top of the old ceiling, seal the door with masking tape so that no dust can spread to the rest of the house.

For any free, impartial advice or a quotation (if you do not want to do this work yourself) Call Alister Constructions and ask for James.

I've not noticed any signal degradation at all, TV or BBC radio, so it sounds as if it's probably intermittent.  Ah -  I did notice a couple of brief  R4 breaks yesterday, and assumed they were studio glitches.  I don't think either lasted more than a minute.
