NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below

On 15th March we have  2 rides. One is a new route over largely familiar ground. The second ride is one we do most years to see what’s new at Kings Cross.
9.30am start from Peckham Square (next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, SE15 5RY). 3 hour ride. To Kings Cross. Granary Square for a coffee break (in market, under cover) and a bit of a look round.  Outward route Cycleways 10 & 6. Over Blackfriars Bridge. Farringdon then quiet streets and safe crossings to Kings Cross. Return leg will take a more easterly route with a bit of Regents Canal path and crossing  Southwark Bridge back to Peckham.  Flat route with lots to see, come and join us. Amanda leading.

A 10 mile circuit passing numerous points of interest and including several places where infrastructure improvements are planned. Start via Cycleway 14 to Jamaica Rd passing the rapidly disappearing Supersewer Site. Next a backstreets route to Cycleway 10 at Willow Walk. This route is scheduled for a significant upgrade including a new cycle crossing of Grange Road. From Willow Walk quiet streets and the Canal Path to Peckham square then Rye Lane to Peckham Rye Park. Cycle the length of the park stopping at the River Peck and then at The Round Café for a break. Homeward ride to Queen’s Rd Station via the tiny Kirkwood Nature Reserve. Continue through Brimmington park and across to Ilderton Road. Work has started here on a cycle crossing of the Old Kent Road. A new cycleway is planned to continue to Surrey Quays and we will follow the route to Southwark Park before getting back to Canada Water. Aim to finish about 12.30. Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.
This ride is part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/

    • I think part of the problem may be that if you are a cyclist and  can see cars and pedestrians after dark, e.g. lit by streetlights and headlights, you don't realise that they can't see you when your bike has no lights and you are dressed in dark non reflective clothing. The other part of the problem may be that you just don't care, of course. ETA: Do Lime bikes not have lights?
    • It was normal cyclists, in rush hour traffic, in the dark, in the rain. Just really want people to realise it’s that time of year even more careful and to get kitted out.
    • The other consideration is that users of Lime bikes and similar, plus younger pedal cyclists, probably don't view themselves as 'cyclists' as such and so don't get kitted out or even consider that they need to. I also agree that earlier nights are another factor for the casual or hire bike user more used to cycling in the summer. I don't think I have ever seen a hire bike or scooter user wearing a helmet or reflective gear- presumably that is because the bike is just viewed as a transport tool for short term use and users do not want to be encumbered by any of the safety gear? Before anyone jumps on me for anecdotal evidence and speculation, this is just what I have seen round here, there may be hordes of similar users elsewhere that are kitted out.
