Due to widespread discontent with Royal Mail (late, delayed and disappearing post), a local consortium of businesspersons is starting a competing service for local mail in the London area.

Starting 1 April and for a trial period of 2 weeks any mail posted to an address in Greater London, will be delivered free of charge providing CITY MAIL is written in the top right corner of the envelope. In East Dulwich, please post in the GREEN postbox outside William Rose at 126, Lordship Lane.

After this period stamps will be available to prepay postage at approximately half the rate of Royal Mail stamps

Contact City Mail (London) at [email protected] for more information.

This is interesting and I wish the service well.  But the biggest problem appears mostly to be with incoming mail which gets as far as the sorting office and then appears to be only randomly delivered to final destinations in East Dulwich.  Is City Mail able to help with this?

Agreed that there has been little evidence of problems with collection, the problem lies with the ED Delivery Office and its removal to Peckham. This is the office which is tragically under-staffed and poorly managed. Very few of the letters sent to me seem to originate in Central London, and this service will thus not benefit me that much.

Despite the date (and the fact that starting up such a service would likely be illegal) an earlier post, in March, and thus presumably not date related, suggested problems with collection as well as delivery. I had thought to discount this whatever the seasonal intention of the OP.

What's wrong with spaghetti trees?  I understand that the conditions are ideal for a good harvest.  When I was younger I'd spend a couple of weeks in Italy helping with the harvest before moving onto pick grapes in vineyards.  I'd urge youngsters to do similar, for example during the school and university summer holidays

    • I've just had Oddbods Handy Services (Iain and Paul) come and sort out some fiddly repair work to a water tank cupboard in our house. They were punctual, professional in their approach, courteous and tidy upon finishing the job. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a handyman and peace of mind knowing they will do a good job. Thanks guys.
    • Of course as these places revive, for the reasons you correctly state, there is no shortage of people moaning “just what we need. Another coffee shop or bar!” and of course there are limits.  But social spaces are the future of revived town centres as much as or more than traditional retail  Face to face shopping is important and a good thing but landlords are not going to swallow the lower rents that are required to revive retail in town centres  shopkeeers don’t help themselves either sometimes. Yer famous butcher in Dulwich spent more time complaining about congestion charge in Kennington instead of saying how that led to his business booming in Dulwich  On the other hand again look  what happened when his butcher shop took off in lordship lane.  Other people started moaning about the queues!!  Successful business!!! Boo hiss   sometimes I do wonder if the “left behind” find themselves in that position not because of govt policy or newcomers  but because they will never be happy and become pains in the hole which business and other people avoid
    • Well you must have a vague idea - perhaps mentioned it to work colleagues?  Must know within a month, two weeks ago? Anyway, personally do report it - next time someone might be killed… Up to you thou…
    • I think you will find that if you can give an approximate idea e.g. August/September and a description of the man, that will give additional info for the police.
