Volunteer Needed - Read Easy Southwark Team Leader and Trustee

Recommended Posts

Read Easy Southwark are looking for a new volunteer team leader and Trustee.

Read Easy Southwark is a local charity which helps adults living in Southwark learn to read or improve their reading skills. We provide reading support that is face to face, one to one, confidential and free. We are looking for a new team leader who is committed and passionate about reading; who will set goals and plan activities to help us develop and expand our service so we deliver reading coaching to as many local people as possible.

With the support of our national charity Read Easy UK you will be responsible for leading our team in Southwark and will work closely with other support organisations and stakeholders in the Borough.

You will need strong leadership and organisational skills to lead our management team, and volunteer reading coaches.

You will have an ability to think and plan strategically, to motivate and inspire trust and confidence, to delegate and support team members so that they get the most out of their roles, and you must also be ready to challenge ideas and attitudes.

Read Easy Southwark was set up three years ago and has been very successful in raising funds and recruiting and training coaches with over 40 readers embarking on their reading programme. This volunteer Trustee role will give you a unique opportunity to change the lives of people struggling to read. Adults who cannot read are five times more likely to be unemployed, more likely to fall into debt, and less able to support their children’s learning. You will help change their story.

    • This week's edition of The Briefing Room I found really useful and impressively informative on the training aspect.  David Aaronovitch has come a long way since his University Challenge day. 😉  It's available to hear online or download as mp3. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002n7wv In a few days time resident doctors -who used to be known as junior doctors - were meant to be going on strike. This would be the 14th strike by the doctors’ union since March 2023. The ostensible reason was pay but now the dispute may be over without more increases to salary levels. The Government has instead made an offer to do something about the other big issue for early career doctors - working conditions and specialist training places. David Aaronovitch and guests discuss what's going on and ask what the problem is with the way we in Britain train our doctors? Guests: Hugh Pym, BBC Health Editor Sir Andrew Goddard, Consultant Gastroenterologist Professor Martin McKee, Professor of European Public Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Mark Dayan, Policy Analyst, Nuffield Trust. Presenter: David Aaronovitch Producers: Caroline Bayley, Kirsteen Knight, Cordelia Hemming Production Co-ordinator: Maria Ogundele Sound Engineers: Michael Regaard, Gareth Jones Editor: Richard Vadon
    • That was one that the BBC seem to have lost track of.  But they do still have quite a few. These are some in their 60s archive. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0028zp6
