Naaah, it's rubbish - it would be a change of use so would need planning. https://www.planningdirect.co.uk/planningappeals/affordable-planning-applications/change-of-use/commercial-to-takeaway-change-of-use

There's not enough footfall for a McDonalds, anyway, and they're quite picky about their sites

Just for information: I see that the Licensing Sub-committee has the Tesco application as item 1 on their 24 July meeting agenda.  https://moderngov.southwark.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=172&MId=8329.

The officer's report to the committtee provides a good succinct summary.  I see, from (original) p.31 of the full public pack, (or more conveniently the supporting documents) that Tesco Legal Dept on 12 June reported that they'd agreed with the police's suggested conditions to be attached to the licence, and the police accordingly withdrew their own representation.  That leaves just one representation, from a member of the public, to be dealt with on the day.

I still think it's not necessarily to be presumed that Tesco will definitely be taking over the premises.  I see that Poundland themselves were granted an off-sales licence on 21 Feb 2023, and surrendered it on 3 July 2025.  I'm not sure they actually ever used it themselves.  Did they?

https://www.southwark.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2024-09/Statement of Licensing Policy 2021-2026.pdf is a full statement of the policy and its application, for thems as is interested.

So top of Lane. Local Sainsbury, middle Co Op and M and S and bottom Tesco Express…..now everyone should be happy except those that want a Waitrose as well…0h and  don’t forget M and S near ED Station….

Can bet the Co Op is nearing its exit soon. At those prices you might as well buy at waitrose!

Much as I'd like to support the Co op, I think the one in Lordship Lane is a really depressing place to shop in, and it would be great if a Waitrose replaced it.

I don't suppose M&S would be delighted, though (and Waitrose probably wouldn't move in, for the same reason).

What is it that makes Waitrose so special! Admittedly I have shopped a couple of times in the Orpington and Beckenham one - sometimes buying food which I cannot get else where. Their 'basic range' is not bad. Price for price and quality - M & S.

In answer to your question Pugwash, the variety of foods that they offer both in canned goods and fresh.

i personally no longer am a Sainsbury customer after years - feel that the quality of both their fruit, veg and fresh products ie meat, chicken, fish is not of a quality that they use to be.

Agree with Sue that Co- Op does not make for a pleasant shopping experience.

On the subject of Waitrose not coming to ED - one can only assume that market research has been done by the company which makes it a non starter which, when you think about it is strange as all the big contenders are here.. Perhaps the powers to be have never heard of ED!! Maybe a Lidl or Aldi will rear their heads but somehow can’t see it as space is way to small. Really is strange that Waitrose is a non arrival - never ceases to amaze me how many eateries are in Lordship Lane alone and the majority all survive.

Love your comment about “shoehorned” - put a smile on my face..!

As for comment about “Little Waitrose” ummmm - never really thought about it. Personally, could not care less. But guess Sainsbury Local and Tesco Express are to you more acceptable..

Ultimately, when I think about it, I actually don’t care what they call themselves - been lured by partially branding and partially convenience and what they offer in groceries.

I've used just about all the locally available supermarkets for deliveries over the years, and I now  use Waitrose for deliveries, for various reasons.

They have a good range of the things I eat, their food is good quality and their "essentials" range is generally good value (except the tissues, which suddenly became so thin as to disintegrate immediately. I was mainly buying them for the nice plain boxes, so now I just put other tissues into the old Waitrose boxes 🤣)

It is very rare for something I've ordered to not be available on the day. Their delivery drivers  are genuinely friendly and helpful.

Their customer service is very good. On the rare occasions I've had issues, they have refunded me without quibbling.

They often have special deals on some of the things I buy often, so I stock up when they are cheaper.

I do occasionally compare prices with other supermarkets, and overall I really don't think Waitrose is more expensive, but obviously they might be for things I don't personally buy.

I absolutely hate Sainsbury's, would use Lidl for some things but they don't deliver, Iceland has a very small range of things I eat, and I can't remember why I don't use Tesco or Asda any more.

I recently checked out Ocado because there was some offer which seemed good value, but they just didn't have enough things I wanted to buy to make it worth using the offer.

M&S don't deliver ( to the best of my knowledge) but in any case they seem to be still badly suffering from the recent hack into their system.

Apologies, I have just remembered this thread is about shopping at actual physical stores, but probably many of the issues are the same.

ETA: And with Waitrose, if you choose a four hour delivery slot it's only £2, and they give you an hour slot within that on the morning of delivery, so you aren't tied to the house for four hours.

    • Hi, oglander , Congratulations on your soon-to-arrive little lion - how exciting! It's always lovely to hear someone taking the adoption route (shelters are having a major crisis at the moment!). I've been in business for 15 years & can say with certainty that most cat owners in Dulwich have catflaps so, not only are they easy to have installed, but you shouldn't find yourself short of helping hands on these local forums. A catflap is a brilliant way to keep your little lion safely in overnight as well as generally keeping track of their comings & goings. I'd be happy to walk you through the set up once you've chosen your model (SureFlap & PetSafe are two popular brands). I'm sure the rescue has already advised, but just in case they haven't, it'll be very important to keep your newly adopted cat housebound for the first 2 weeks to familiarise themselves with their new home. Once they've scent-mapped the house, you can gradually begin letting them out to explore & scent-map the garden. Exciting times! x
    • Hello all,  If your child goes to this gym club: since the new payment system, have you received clear information about the cost per session, the cost per term and when sessions will be omitted eg for school opened days? (I have asked the club, more than once, no full response so far) This term started in late August, before school had gone back (did many attend that session?). Next term there is no break for half term, so there are 12 sessions to be paid. Does that seem to be more sessions than there used to be?    I am sure they are doing their best, but the info from the new auto pay system isn’t detailed enough, and the auto pay just takes an unspecified amount. I wondered if it’s just me (wanting more detail), or if there are others too? (my child loves the gym itself!) thanks
    • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Excellent service! We had one of Paul Edgley’ s team come to fit some new lights in our living room. They were able to come at reasonably short notice, arrived on time, were friendly and professional, and did a great job. Everything was left clean and tidy afterwards, and the lights look fantastic. Highly recommend! Paul’s contact details are 07802 627967
