Naaah, it's rubbish - it would be a change of use so would need planning. https://www.planningdirect.co.uk/planningappeals/affordable-planning-applications/change-of-use/commercial-to-takeaway-change-of-use

There's not enough footfall for a McDonalds, anyway, and they're quite picky about their sites

Just for information: I see that the Licensing Sub-committee has the Tesco application as item 1 on their 24 July meeting agenda.  https://moderngov.southwark.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=172&MId=8329.

The officer's report to the committtee provides a good succinct summary.  I see, from (original) p.31 of the full public pack, (or more conveniently the supporting documents) that Tesco Legal Dept on 12 June reported that they'd agreed with the police's suggested conditions to be attached to the licence, and the police accordingly withdrew their own representation.  That leaves just one representation, from a member of the public, to be dealt with on the day.

I still think it's not necessarily to be presumed that Tesco will definitely be taking over the premises.  I see that Poundland themselves were granted an off-sales licence on 21 Feb 2023, and surrendered it on 3 July 2025.  I'm not sure they actually ever used it themselves.  Did they?

https://www.southwark.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2024-09/Statement of Licensing Policy 2021-2026.pdf is a full statement of the policy and its application, for thems as is interested.

So top of Lane. Local Sainsbury, middle Co Op and M and S and bottom Tesco Express…..now everyone should be happy except those that want a Waitrose as well…0h and  don’t forget M and S near ED Station….

Can bet the Co Op is nearing its exit soon. At those prices you might as well buy at waitrose!

Much as I'd like to support the Co op, I think the one in Lordship Lane is a really depressing place to shop in, and it would be great if a Waitrose replaced it.

I don't suppose M&S would be delighted, though (and Waitrose probably wouldn't move in, for the same reason).

What is it that makes Waitrose so special! Admittedly I have shopped a couple of times in the Orpington and Beckenham one - sometimes buying food which I cannot get else where. Their 'basic range' is not bad. Price for price and quality - M & S.

In answer to your question Pugwash, the variety of foods that they offer both in canned goods and fresh.

i personally no longer am a Sainsbury customer after years - feel that the quality of both their fruit, veg and fresh products ie meat, chicken, fish is not of a quality that they use to be.

Agree with Sue that Co- Op does not make for a pleasant shopping experience.

On the subject of Waitrose not coming to ED - one can only assume that market research has been done by the company which makes it a non starter which, when you think about it is strange as all the big contenders are here.. Perhaps the powers to be have never heard of ED!! Maybe a Lidl or Aldi will rear their heads but somehow can’t see it as space is way to small. Really is strange that Waitrose is a non arrival - never ceases to amaze me how many eateries are in Lordship Lane alone and the majority all survive.

They have a convenience chain branded 'Little Waitrose', which puts me off them a bit. I m not sure why.

Waitrose is a much smaller chain than any of the others, including M&S, which may explain why they're not here.

Love your comment about “shoehorned” - put a smile on my face..!

As for comment about “Little Waitrose” ummmm - never really thought about it. Personally, could not care less. But guess Sainsbury Local and Tesco Express are to you more acceptable..

Ultimately, when I think about it, I actually don’t care what they call themselves - been lured by partially branding and partially convenience and what they offer in groceries.

I've used just about all the locally available supermarkets for deliveries over the years, and I now  use Waitrose for deliveries, for various reasons.

They have a good range of the things I eat, their food is good quality and their "essentials" range is generally good value (except the tissues, which suddenly became so thin as to disintegrate immediately. I was mainly buying them for the nice plain boxes, so now I just put other tissues into the old Waitrose boxes 🤣)

It is very rare for something I've ordered to not be available on the day. Their delivery drivers  are genuinely friendly and helpful.

Their customer service is very good. On the rare occasions I've had issues, they have refunded me without quibbling.

They often have special deals on some of the things I buy often, so I stock up when they are cheaper.

I do occasionally compare prices with other supermarkets, and overall I really don't think Waitrose is more expensive, but obviously they might be for things I don't personally buy.

I absolutely hate Sainsbury's, would use Lidl for some things but they don't deliver, Iceland has a very small range of things I eat, and I can't remember why I don't use Tesco or Asda any more.

I recently checked out Ocado because there was some offer which seemed good value, but they just didn't have enough things I wanted to buy to make it worth using the offer.

M&S don't deliver ( to the best of my knowledge) but in any case they seem to be still badly suffering from the recent hack into their system.

Apologies, I have just remembered this thread is about shopping at actual physical stores, but probably many of the issues are the same.

ETA: And with Waitrose, if you choose a four hour delivery slot it's only £2, and they give you an hour slot within that on the morning of delivery, so you aren't tied to the house for four hours.

    • So why are/were they "real"? Does the word have a different meaning in  estate agent speak?
    • You clearly like middle-eastern food, so Zaytoon in Peckham is worth a try. It's Lebanese, so grilled meats, fresh fish and really interesting salads. I'd recommend their chickpea and lentil soup as well - I've tried to replicate it myself, it's that good. It's on a couple of levels, but only two or three shallow steps up to the dining area at the back, and once you're up there, you're on the same level as the bathrooms. It's BYO, and no corkage, but do sort yourselves out on your Tesco Club Card for anything half- right before you get down there - the offies opposite have got wise to it now and are charging accordingly. I've eaten there many times, the food is always excellent, the portions are huge (I've never finished). very reasonable and it's got a really laid-back atmosphere. I haven't had to book, but I've seen larger parties in there who maybe did. I really can't see they'd have a issue with it - the staff are very accommodating. I just checked TripAdvisor (5 stars) and one review specifically mentions how much their kids enjoyed it. It's at 94 Rye Lane, open from 11 til 3ish (at the weekends) and is accessible via the 12, 37, 63, 363 and P13 routes.
