Two rides of very different character for June 7th. An Inner London circuit of ex-Power Stations and an Outer London, train assisted, ride in Epping Forest.
Bruce leading a circuit to Tate Modern, Lots Road and Battersea Power. The large power station buildings have been preserved for these three. The uses of the sites are now very different – an art gallery, largely residential and a mixed residential and retail/leisure development.  Chance to compare the different fates of these landmark sites and consider if they are now contributing as much as when they kept the lights on and the tube system running.
Ride starts 10am from Burgess Park (Stomping Grounds Café, Chumleigh Gdns). Back streets/Cyclway to Tate Modern followed by a long ride to Lots Road via the Imperial War Museum, Vauxhall Bridge and the embankment. From Lots Rd, across Albert Bridge and through Battersea Park (probable refreshment break) to Battersea Power Station. Then back to Burgess Park via Thessaly Rd, Larkfield Park and quiet streets across Stockwell.  21km, 13 miles, flat. Should be back around 1pm allowing for look around time at each power station. Owen seems determined to get us all out into the Essex countryside. Following his successful Essex Ramble last month (https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2025/ride-reports-3rd-may-2025/) he has devised another. We are heading to Epping Forest this time. A 27km (16 miles) circuit from Chingford to Epping and back. Farthest point on the ride will be at Epping Signalling Museum. Coffee stop will be at High Beech. Other places of interest we will stop at will be Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge and Connaught Water. The ride will start at 9.30am at Chingford Station and will finish at approximately 1.30pm back at Chingford Station.  We are mostly off road - 70% on gravel, 5% on grass. Just 25% on tarmac (paths and road). We think a Brompton would be OK. However NOT a road bike with slim wheels, need hybrid size tyres with plenty grip.  Sections of the route are “undulating” and overall it will be a challenging ride, A reasonable level of fitness will be needed.  GPX file of route at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/route-for-epping-forest-ramble/
Getting to Chingford from Central London. Obvious option is Overground (Weaver Line) from Liverpool St. 27 min ride, trains every 15 min, fare £3.60.
Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.

Getting to Chingford from Central London. Obvious option is Overground (Weaver Line) from Liverpool St. 27 min ride, trains every 15 min, fare £3.60.
Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.

Owen seems determined to get us all out into the Essex countryside. Following his successful Essex Ramble last month (https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2025/ride-reports-3rd-may-2025/) he has devised another. We are heading to Epping Forest this time. A 27km (16 miles) circuit from Chingford to Epping and back. Farthest point on the ride will be at Epping Signalling Museum. Coffee stop will be at High Beech. Other places of interest we will stop at will be Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge and Connaught Water. The ride will start at 9.30am at Chingford Station and will finish at approximately 1.30pm back at Chingford Station.  We are mostly off road - 70% on gravel, 5% on grass. Just 25% on tarmac (paths and road). We think a Brompton would be OK. Owen and I have decided to postpone the Epping Forest Ramble until July 5th. Due to bad forecast for Saturday and only 3 registrants. Hope we get better weather on 5th July. For tomorrow there is space on the Power Stations ride starting 10am from Burgess Park. This is shorter and on tarmac all the way so will be OK if the forecast is correct. Dress appropriately!

    • There is no law about what people must wear when cycling. The highway code also suggests that pedestrians might want to wear bright clothes in order to make themselves more visible, but I don't think many people actually do. I think they should wear what ever they feel comfortable in. You shouldn't have to wear 'special clothes' in order to use a bicycle, or to walk, or to drive. Seeing as you pose a far greater risk to others when you're travelling by car, there is arguably a far greater moral duty on you to consider how colourful your car is painted, than there is for pedestrian or cyclist to dress in bright colours. There are laws about lights. I agree that people should have lights on at night.  There are invisible cyclists? 🤣
    • Cyclists who chose not to follow advice, guidance or rules specific to visability in poor light conditions choose the risks they run and I see no reason for sympathy when their luck runs out. However, I do feel sympathy both for pedestrians hit by invisible cyclists, and obviously those with visual or hearing impairment which adds to their risk on the pavements or road, and to drivers who may hit these invisible cyclists and suffer guilt or trauma having done so. And anyone who wishes to suggest that a cyclist so hit is not to blame because it's always the drivers fault can go hang.  Why do you think the rules and guidance exist in the first place? 
    • You are again misinformed. The Highway Code is also clear about clothing.   It is here. Section 59 Section 59 of the Highway Code explains the appropriate clothing cyclists should wear in order to make it easier for other road users to spot them and help to keep them protected in the case of a collision. Cyclist clothing: Helmet – Your cycle helmet should conform to the current regulations, be the correct size for your head and be securely fastened. Appropriate fitted clothing – Your clothing should be tight fitted to prevent it getting tangled in the chain or wheel of your bicycle. Light clothing – Light and fluorescent clothing will help you to stand out in daylight and poor light. Reflective accessories – Strips on the helmet, as well as armbands and ankle bands will help you be seen in the dark. and  Section 60 This section of the Highway Code is all about cyclists’ lights and reflectors. At night cyclists must have their white front and red rear lights lit. Their bicycles must also be fitted with a red rear reflector and amber pedal reflectors. White front reflectors and spoke reflectors can also increase your visibility to other road users. Flashing lights are permitted but cyclists riding in areas without street lighting should use a steady front lamp instead.
