I quite enjoyed the atmosphere at the Bellenden Road one. Loads of kids playing around, local traders getting some business, some nice music. It was also a realisation how much non-local car traffic use the surrounding roads as rat runs, it was incredibly quieter walking to and from Bellenden. Thanks to Southwark and the local traders for putting this together.

Completely agree, the council should be applauded for a brilliant event on Bellenden Rd. Lovely joy-filled community atmosphere with lots of smiling faces. Nice to see local traders making the most of the extra footfall with food / ice cream stalls.

Sounds good. We used to have the ED Christmas Cracker which was similar and a great community event. Was there once a similar event in summer too?

I walked all the way through the market on Saturday and had no idea there had been an event there until I saw this thread four days later.

Saturday's  was a total non event, sadly.

I don't recall Summer events in North Cross Road similar to the Christmas Cracker. I imagine Christmas draws more people to the shops there than Summer.

You might be right. I have a memory of street performers on a warm sunny day in Lordship Lane, but maybe it was the Xmas Cracker and it was just one of those stunning Decmber days where the sun is very bright in blue skies and 15*C feels warm for Winter

There were street parties in Crystal Palace Road in the summer, with live music from local bands etc.

Could you be thinking of those?

Unfortunately some of the organisers moved out of the area, and nobody stepped up to replace them.

There was too much work involved for the remaining organisers to do alone.

    • https://www.letslinkuk.net/ I'm interested to know why the OP didn't find this sort of scheme to work, as I would have thought it was much harder to find someone to do a direct exchange with? Does anybody else have experience of a scheme like this? Happy to be persuaded!
    • I personally think is a great idea Bobbly and would love if there was a section for it. I wouldn't offer free gardening under the "for sale" section as I would expect something in exchange and wouldn't expect our cat being looked after for free under the "wanted" section, as an example.

    • I have fond memories of Govinda's I used to go there  back in the 90's (maybe earlier) for an affordable tasty lunch..I was wondering if its still around. Now I have to make a point of going there. Does anyone else remember a really affordable basement cafe run by the church in a street off of Golden Square? parallel to Regent Street? I also used to love the Vegetarian cafe on Neal Street in the basement (Neal Street Cafe?) and there was an inczredible inexpensive authentic Japanese resturant I use to go to with my Japanese friends (who introduced me to it) tucked away behind Long Acre where that brown brick modern building ('modern' I think it went up in the 90's!) now stands that fronts Long Acre and Neal Street..I think it was called Asakasa or something?
