two new free cycle rides Sat July 19th

Recommended Posts

We have two rides organised for July 19th, One is our annual run to Cody Dock on the Lower Lea. .  < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cutty-sark-to-cody-dock-cycle-ride-tickets-1489630879059?aff=oddtdtcreator >)
Please note. Electric bikes are not allowed on the cable car. This means we cannot accommodate e-bikes on this ride. Sorry.
9.30 start (not usual 10am) from Cutty Sark, next to the tunnel entrance. Amanda leading a cross river circuit to Cody Dock. Cody Dock is run as a charitable Social Enterprise with the aim of regenerating the dock and surrounding waterways (see https://codydock.org.uk). What has been created is quite special. And it includes a Cafe where we will take a break. We plan to use the “by air and by sea” route. Outward will go to the Cable Car at the O2 via the Thames path, then fly across the river and head for Cody Dock. Return will be via the free Woolwich Ferry followed by the Thames path back to Greenwich. If short of time will return via Isle of Dogs and use DLR from Mudchute to cross the river.  Bring Travel Card etc. for the Cable car (full fare is £7). Aim is to be back by 1.30pm.
We now have a second shorter ride organised for July 19th, which is just as well as the Cody Dock ride (Cutty Sark to Cody Dock.  < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cutty-sark-to-cody-dock-cycle-ride-tickets-1489630879059?aff=oddtdtcreator > is nearly fully committed.
10am start at Dulwich Clock Cafe in Dulwich Park. Plan to finish there at 12.30. Eduardo leading an 11 mile loop via Nunhead, Waterlink Way and Penge to Crystal Palace Park. Coffee stop at the Green and Brown Café then the ascent through the park, via the dinosaurs, to Crystal Palace Parade. Finally the glorious downhill all the way back to Dulwich Park. A ride we regularly do in mid-winter, but it will make an excellent summer ride too. Everyone welcome on an easy ride with lots to see (and forecast is good again!). Route at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=15cFwfv7hYe-kAWTFuyPrOMIVyPdfIgPm&usp=sharing. GPX file attached.

Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.  How to cancel: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/help/en-gb/articles/557726/how-to-cancel-or-delete-a-free-order/.  Remember finish times are approximate and it is best not to schedule something immediately after the ride; give yourself an allowance for mechanical or other problems on the ride.
These rides are part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/

    • I think part of the problem may be that if you are a cyclist and  can see cars and pedestrians after dark, e.g. lit by streetlights and headlights, you don't realise that they can't see you when your bike has no lights and you are dressed in dark non reflective clothing. The other part of the problem may be that you just don't care, of course. ETA: Do Lime bikes not have lights?
    • It was normal cyclists, in rush hour traffic, in the dark, in the rain. Just really want people to realise it’s that time of year even more careful and to get kitted out.
    • The other consideration is that users of Lime bikes and similar, plus younger pedal cyclists, probably don't view themselves as 'cyclists' as such and so don't get kitted out or even consider that they need to. I also agree that earlier nights are another factor for the casual or hire bike user more used to cycling in the summer. I don't think I have ever seen a hire bike or scooter user wearing a helmet or reflective gear- presumably that is because the bike is just viewed as a transport tool for short term use and users do not want to be encumbered by any of the safety gear? Before anyone jumps on me for anecdotal evidence and speculation, this is just what I have seen round here, there may be hordes of similar users elsewhere that are kitted out.
