two new free cycle rides Sat August 16th

Recommended Posts

NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below.  Do not turn up for rides if you have not been able to register. The number limit is defined in our Rusk Assessment for Healthy Rides. If a serious injury occurred on a ride and we were found not to have conformed to our RA then London Cycling Campaign, our parent organisation, could be liable for damages that could bankrupt LCC. So please only attend rides for which you have registered on Eventbrite.

On the 16rh August we have two rides, both popular routes we ride most years.  One is a longish ride to Kensington Palace led by Amanda. The other short ride led by Bruce will go looking for butterflies to coincide with the national Big Butterfly Count.

Ride 1.  Butterfly Cycle Ride in Southwark and Lambeth < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/butterfly-cycle-ride-in-southwark-and-lambeth-tickets-1573792839749?aff=oddtdtcreator >
10.00 am to 12.00 noon. Start/finish Peckham Square, next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, SE15 5RY. Bruce leading his award winning ride on a 9 mile loop through parks and open spaces where hopefully we will see some butterflies. Ride coincides with the Big Butterfly Count.  We will not be counting but will visit good places to count if you are inspired to return. Main sites to be visited: Peckham Rye Park (wildflower meadow), Ruskin Park (Nature Reserve), Myatts Fields (wild area), Burgess Park.  Easy ride with plenty of time allowed for hunting for butterflies. Route at
http://goo.gl/v14knG . Deliberately making this s short ride with no coffee break. This was our default format for years and will still suit some riders. I will be getting a coffee at the finish if anyone wants to join me and chat before heading home. More information about the Big Butterfly Count at https://bigbutterflycount.butterfly-conservation.org/.  Report from July 23rd 2022 ride at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2022/ride-reports-23rd-july-2022/
Start 9.30 am at London Bridge (The Southwark Needle, south side). Estimated finish 1:00pm. Amanda leading a circular ride. Out along the south side of the river and over Westminster Bridge, then Horseguards and the Mall and through Hyde Park to Kensington Palace. Return via Battersea Park and the Power Station. Final stretch back along the river and C14. Coffee break, probably at Black Cab Cafe, 9 Elms Lane.  As usual keeping to the quieter streets. Lots and lots to see. About 15 miles and flat, so we are giving ourselves plenty of time for a nice easy-paced ride. Report from 2024 ride at: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2024/ride-reports-17th-august-2024/
Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. These rides are part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/

    • Yes, I did mention the train, which I now get from East Dulwich to Guys instead of the 40. Depends where in East Dulwich you are starting from which route is easiest! I think it is probably lack of staff rather than lack of hospitals which is the problem?
    • What can be done? How about reporting it to the police?
    • I can also strongly recommend Lukasz after he completed some floorboard repairs and some complex repairs to skirting damaged through dog chews. He is responsive, punctual, reasonably priced, detail-oriented and his work is to a very high standard.
    • Really? Yes you are probably right as I know from personal experience with Guys… as I claiming travel costs back, that no one told me I could claim! Left hand does not know what right hand is doing regarding admin..  If they charged people for wasting overstretched staff in A& E as in not urgent just might deter people from wasting precious time…. But then you need interpreters, to explain if language is a barrier and admin staff to administer..  Correct me if I am wrong but is there not a train from Denmark Hill or East Dulwich which goes to London Bridge? Would be faster than 2 buses I would have thought.    Oh, forgot about Tessa Jowell but thought you needed GP referral in which case, that would be the place to go rather than a bigger hospital. Know there is one in Beckenham and you can call and they will give you an idea as to wait time…..same I hope at TJ…assuming they answer phone.. If one really things about it…too many  people in London for example and to few hospitals…
