ed_pete
I've received a speeding for driving at 24mph along Peckham Rye near Piermont Green. Be careful out there ! 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366164-speeding-ticket-near-piemont-green/ Share on other sites
malumbu
Wouldn't say be careful, just be aware of the blanket 20 mph and drive accordingly. You will hopefully appreciate the speed awareness course. That's a genuine comment 😁 2 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366164-speeding-ticket-near-piemont-green/#findComment-1718076 Share on other sites
first mate
Bad luck. You can overall be very aware of the speed limit and overall stick to it but lose concentration momentarily and, if near a camera, you are done for. I do not for one moment think you are not 'aware' of 20mph. 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366164-speeding-ticket-near-piemont-green/#findComment-1718078 Share on other sites
ed_pete
Happy to do the speed awareness rather than take the points tbh. Was on my way to a funeral so maybe not concentrating as I much as I should have been. 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366164-speeding-ticket-near-piemont-green/#findComment-1718081 Share on other sites
teddyboy23
I got done twice in a month 22mph and 23mph.make the speed limit 25mph most days I've been behind other motorist doing 17or 18 mph.ive been passed by joggers.🏃♂️ might as well start producing cars with only 2 gears Edited August 25 by teddyboy23 1 2 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366164-speeding-ticket-near-piemont-green/#findComment-1718083 Share on other sites

If you don't stick to it, you can't complain if you are fined. I and probably most people have accidentally gone over it sometimes, but I wouldn't then complain if I was "caught". I have had fines for speeding in the past (in a 30mph area) but it just made me more careful in the future. I don't have the stats to hand, but I believe there is evidence that the lowered speed limit has reduced accidents, injuries and fatalities. I stand to be corrected. 1 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366164-speeding-ticket-near-piemont-green/#findComment-1718087 Share on other sites
first mate
I think the OP's comment that they were on their way to a funeral is the point really. Human error and all that...it happens to us all and under such circumstances a fine can feel harsh. But, it is what it is. I just don't know how helpful it is to advise others to be 'aware'. As I said, you can be very aware but under certain conditions, have a momentary lapse in concentration. Sue, I know you were not doling out advice to be 'aware', so not a response to you. 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366164-speeding-ticket-near-piemont-green/#findComment-1718088 Share on other sites

Azalea
Who gets the money from these tickets? The area local authority? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366164-speeding-ticket-near-piemont-green/#findComment-1723617 Share on other sites
malumbu
No. Government. Speeding is still classified as criminal, although you don't get a record for this. You have to have a silent protest against genocide for that. I'd prefer local authorities to be responsible so the money could be used for safer roads. 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366164-speeding-ticket-near-piemont-green/#findComment-1723633 Share on other sites

The world record for the marathon is an average of 13.1 mph. If the speed limit was 25 we’d have people complaining about being unfairly ‘done’ for going ‘only’ 28 mph, just as people feel it’s unfair to be penalised at 35 in a 30. 2 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366164-speeding-ticket-near-piemont-green/#findComment-1723759 Share on other sites

ianr
Apropos the 20mph limit, while looking up one of our minor nobility who's got herself in the news again, I came across this recent Lords response to her written question about it. https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2025-03-25/HL6099/ Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366164-speeding-ticket-near-piemont-green/#findComment-1723770 Share on other sites

I very much suspect the visitors are not trying to get about London on a daily basis! I agree 20mph makes sense in some places but not all places and the blanket approach is not a smart one. I tend to agree with those who suggest the placement of some cameras in London suggest revenue generation is the paramount objective rather than road safety. I know it is not 20mph but 30 mph limit on the elevated dual carriageway section of the Westway is an utter joke and has nothing to do with road safety but is probably raking in the money - probably from the very visitors to the city who happen to have the misfortune to drive in that way and don't understand the trap that has been set for them! 1 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366164-speeding-ticket-near-piemont-green/#findComment-1723818 Share on other sites

malumbu
Go on a speed awareness course and they will explain how every extra 1 mph will cause much greater harm when you hit bone and soft tissue. They also tell you how little time you save by speeding. I'm absolutely stunned how any of you can defend speeding. Money goes to central government, complain to them if you have a problem. Introduction of speed awareness courses gives you a second chance, saves points against your license, higher insurance and the chance to become a better and more courteous driver. 2 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366164-speeding-ticket-near-piemont-green/#findComment-1723825 Share on other sites

That was forty years ago when a police officer may have stopped you in a following car. 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366164-speeding-ticket-near-piemont-green/#findComment-1723845 Share on other sites
Rockets
Who sets the 20mph speed limit - it's not the police is it but the local authority isn't it? Drive from Southwark into Bromley and the speed limit changes from 20mph to 30mph. 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366164-speeding-ticket-near-piemont-green/#findComment-1723849 Share on other sites
malumbu
The police (Enforce speed limits as the link below confirms]. Not sure why you have to question my expertise. A simple Google will give you the (same) answer https://www.london.gov.uk/who-we-are/what-london-assembly-does/questions-mayor/find-an-answer/enforcement-20mph-zones-local-roads Good on the boroughs who have adopted 20mph [local authorities can set lower speed limits] , and shame on those who haven't. Cycling around Bromley many cars are doing 40mph plus on residential roads. Surely you can't condone that. Rockets
Well, who said I was questioning your expertise? But are you sure, the very same Google search will tell you it is local traffic authorities that set the speed limit. Who are the local traffic authorities in Southwark; TFL for major roads; Southwark council for local roads. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/setting-local-speed-limits/setting-local-speed-limits 1 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366164-speeding-ticket-near-piemont-green/#findComment-1723863 Share on other sites
malumbu
They [local authorities] set the [lower] speed limits, we all know that, good for them. The police enforce - what on earth is your point? Councils bringing in speed limits to protect lives [confirms my first sentence]. It is clearly not a generator of revenue. Why would you have a problem? We have had numerous discussions over the last few years, and whilst I know that you are not a petrolhead your views come over as an apologist for motorists breaking the rules. Yet you go on an on about cyclists, including those few that can exceed 20 mph. Rockets
The point is I asked who sets the speed limits and you said the police and I challenged you on that and then you suggested I was questioning your "expertise" by asking that question. But, in fact, it is the local traffic authority who sets the speed limit and not the police. So I was right to ask the question wasn't I because what you were saying was wrong?
