Cancerian
Turned right from Lordship Lane today onto Townley Road (before 3pm as you’re allowed to do whilst driving a car)! but was met by another set of temporary traffic lights halfway along. Thames water have finished doing a big job there but now looks like another company are on site and widening some of the pavement for some reason. Can’t see why as it’s on the side where the private coaches park up during the term time and the pavement has been fine for many years. Only thing I can think of is that the private school want another crossing? 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366276-what%E2%80%99s-going-on-in-townley-road/ Share on other sites
ed_pete
I think they're putting in a zebra crossing to make it safer to cross the road between the playing fields on the south side and the school on the north side. 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366276-what%E2%80%99s-going-on-in-townley-road/#findComment-1718343 Share on other sites
alice
That’s making me cry. So much for prioritising the vulnerable. 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366276-what%E2%80%99s-going-on-in-townley-road/#findComment-1718349 Share on other sites

alice
The only children that would be crossing there would be accompanied by teaching / support staff. But no, it’s a very non-busy road because of current Southwark restrictions and as all children would be over 11 I don’t consider them vulnerable. Rockets
Isn't there a pedestrian refuge there at the moment - does anyone ever have any problem crossing Townley - it can be a challenge at the junction of Lordship Lane but everywhere else there seems to be no problem at all. Are they also doing this to try and make it difficult for the school coaches to park there as you lose a lot of parking space with a pedestrian crossing? Southwark seem to be going a bit pedestrian crossing mad and I sense they are using them as a bit of a trojan horse and not actually for the purpose for which they were designed - it's getting like the old Milton Keynes and roundabouts urban myth that during planning a roundabout was signalled by a brown circle and the planners kept putting their coffee cups on the map which left brown circles everywhere! 1 1 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/366276-what%E2%80%99s-going-on-in-townley-road/#findComment-1718369 Share on other sites

Rockets
I see they are removing the existing pedestrian refuge....to say this feels like overkill is a massive understatement. Another council white elephant waste of tax payers money replacing a perfectly functioning existing solution. Can anyone come up with a commonsense reason why this is needed and not snigger when they tell us? That is not a difficult road to cross. ed_pete
I found this. https://engage.southwark.gov.uk/en-GB/projects/townley-crossings/1 There was a consultation last year in October. I certainly wasn't aware of it. I wish the council would communicate these things more widely.
