Turned right from Lordship Lane today onto Townley Road (before 3pm as you’re allowed to do whilst driving a car)! but was met by another set of temporary traffic lights halfway along. Thames water have finished doing a big job there but now looks like another company are on site and widening some of the pavement for some reason. Can’t see why as it’s on the side where the private coaches park up during the term time and the pavement has been fine for many years.
Only thing I can think of is that the private school want another crossing?

The only children that would be crossing there would be accompanied by teaching / support  staff.  But no, it’s a very non-busy road because of current Southwark restrictions and as all children would be over 11 I don’t consider them vulnerable.

Isn't there a pedestrian refuge there at the moment - does anyone ever have any problem crossing Townley - it can be a challenge at the junction of Lordship Lane but everywhere else there seems to be no problem at all.

Are they also doing this to try and make it difficult for the school coaches to park there as you lose a lot of parking space with a pedestrian crossing?

Southwark seem to be going a bit pedestrian crossing mad and I sense they are using them as a bit of a trojan horse and not actually for the purpose for which they were designed - it's getting like the old Milton Keynes and roundabouts urban myth that during planning a roundabout was signalled by a brown circle and the planners kept putting their coffee cups on the map which left brown circles everywhere!

I see they are removing the existing pedestrian refuge....to say this feels like overkill is a massive understatement.

Another council white elephant waste of tax payers money replacing a perfectly functioning existing solution. Can anyone come up with a commonsense reason why this is needed and not snigger when they tell us? That is not a difficult road to cross.

    • He looks like the human version of the 😡 emoji. I'm sure he's lovely in real life (whoever he is).
    • Absolutely, Insuflo I very much doubt that anyone other than football fans would have heard of Dyche, much less his views on false number nines, mobile centre halves  dropping into midfield or diamond formations. But all middle-aged, portly, bald, gruffly spoken football fans from north of the capital who eschew fancy Dan tactics for the traditional, English merits of 4-4-2 shall be deemed knuckle-dragging Neanderthals by the Wokerati and the Metropolitan Elite. They care not what his views are, only that he looks like the sort of person who may have them. It's political correctness gone mad. But they, unlike Dyche, won't have a pub named after them.
    • I'm afraid I have no idea who Sean Dyche is, but I'm sure I could research him (and his views on library refurbishment timetables, if any) on any of the Southwark libraries' internet access computers. Free for any library member!
    • So that suggests the consultations with 'community' are just a tick box exercise where information given cannot be relied on. Not a good look. I hope Renata Hamvas who is the local councillor, as well as licensing, finds a way to stop the wholesale, spreadingmonetisation of an important green space in summer. If they get this it'll end up like Brockwell Park before you know it.
