Can Rayner survive this?

"Angela Rayner admits underpaying stamp duty on £800,000 seaside flat | Angela Rayner | The Guardian" https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/sep/03/angela-rayner-admits-underpaying-stamp-duty-on-800000-seaside-flat

Complex property arrangements, the investigation will show whether her solicitor cocked it up or whether she misled.

She's one of the more I interesting politicians and the right wing media will be looking out for anything and everything.

Explains why she went to the Guardian.

I'd change your bookies if you're only getting 5s. She's out to 7s at most places.

She's shortened to 2-1 to be next out of the Cabinet now, that's a hell of a shift in a morning. I'm glad I had a tenner at 5-1. I reckon she'll be evens or odds on by lunchtime tomorrow.

Reeves is still favourite to leave next at 11-10.

Let me know if you fancy £50 on whether she's out or next leader.

It's not Starmer call anyway is it? Isn't Rayner elected to her position by the party? He can freeze her out, sure but not sack her

From what I've read, her problems appear to be on the "oh FFS this is too complicated" rather than genuinely venal money-grabbing, and I liked Ed Davey's words this evening

That's all a bit complicated, as well. She was voted in as deputy leader, not deputy Prime Minister, by the party. There's no requirement to have a deputy PM, so she could be sacked by Starmer by simply ending the position I'd imagine

The housing secretary role is down to appointment by Starmer, so he could kick her out of that. I'm not sure that the housing minister, or any minister in fact, has an automatic right to a seat at cabinet.

I think it's the attacks she's made on Tories that are her problem here. Mistakes do get made, but she's given little credence to other's 'mistakes' in the past and called for resignations.

Let's just hope the enquiry gets published soon. There are a lot more important things to be getting on with.

She is done for. She has become an embarrassment to the party. It was only just over 12 months ago she had the issues with the sale of her house in Stockport and the electoral register. She can’t be trusted and will be gone soon I suspect and if you’re going to set yourself up as the party Rottweiler calling out Tory sleaze you had better hope no sleazy accusations land at your front door (in Hove or at any of your other properties). She is damaging Starmer’s already weakened credibility and becoming a distraction and people will no longer trust her - she knows it’s only a matter of time.

She's come in slightly, Reeves has lengthened.

Joint favourites at 15-8.

ETA

Rayner in front by a short head at 7-4.

Looks like some fairly questionable stuff is going to come out about where the cash to buy out her share of the trust, which then provided the deposit on the Hove flat, came from.

That's on top of the Stamp Duty issue.

Who do you prefer:

Lib Dem leader Ed Davey, who had earlier in the week voiced his support for Rayner, given her caring duties for her son, tells the BBC he hopes the government can "move on and deal with the huge problems millions of people in our country face".

Davey adds that it's "clear" her position became "untenable".

"It was inevitable," says Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, adding that "you can't be housing secretary and avoid £40,000 of stamp duty".

Farage says Rayner's resignation as deputy leader of the Labour party and deputy PM will trigger an internal election within the Labour party - and "you're going to see the hard left of Labour shouting very, very loudly".

The Growlers gone, that's what happens when you attack others, it comes back and bites you on the backside twice as hard and deep 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. The question's who's next to replace her?

Just Reeves and Starmer to follow plus Streeting, Philipson and who else, can't even think who else he has on his front bench.

And for fairness and evenness this is Keirs response to Angela;

Dear Angela

Thank you for informing me of your decision to resign from the Government. I am very sad that your time as Deputy prime Minister, Secretary of State and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party has ended in this way.

As you know we acted in accordance with the strengthened system relating to ministerial conduct that we put in place on coming into Government. You were right to refer yourself to the Independent Adviser on Ministerial Standards and right to act on his conclusions.

Although I believe you have reached the right decision, it is a decision which I know is very painful for you. You have given your all to making the Labour Government a success and you have been a central art of our plan to make Britain fairer for working families. Your work at MHCLG to help build the homes that Britain needs has been hugely important and your work to create more fairness in the workplace through the Employment Rights Bill represents a very significant achievement that will change the lives of millions of people.

On a personal note, I am very sad to be losing you from the Government. You have been a trusted colleague and a true friend for many years. I have nothing but admiration for you and huge respect for your achievement in politics. I know that many people of all political persuasions admire that someone as talented as you is the living embodiment of social mobility.

Given though you won't be part of the Government, you will remain a major figure in our party. I know that you will continue to fight for the causes you care so passionately about.

My very best wishes, and with real sadness,

Keir

If only Doris Stokes was still alive as she could contact Maggie who would sort this country out again. 😅

Thank God Doris Stokes is not still alive, then 🤣🤣🤣

Unfortunately we do need a strong leader, which we haven't had for nearly 20 years now, to shape the future direction of this country.

None of the currently leaders of any of the parties are strong in my opinion so regardless of what happens we are, well I am sure you get the idea 🙃

Oh dear, another Labour bashing thread.  Some unhappy bunnies out there with very short memories about the last government.

Sadly the Labour home goals and rather irrelevant Tory party play into the hands of Farage.

Guess the same could be said about short memories and the last few labour governments.

Ultimately the grass is always greener...

    • If you read the article posted above, it is all very carefully worded. However I've found this: https://uknip.co.uk/news/uk/uk-news/peckham-rye-park-attack-man-seriously-injured-august-2025/
    • Angela Rayner had this country at her feet but as soon as I saw that photo of her lounging about in the kayak off her new seaside home, vaping and drinking!
    • This is horrible to hear about. We used to get daily Police patrols on foot & even regular patrols on horseback in the area. I know our local station had some bad eggs, but the officers I came across in the area back then were all a fantastic bunch. Sadly nowadays the Met's presence is non-existent, bar the weekly walk from the SNT. I hope something gets done, arrests made and the victim some genuine support and counselling.
    • Two wrongs don't make a right. Labour ran on a manifesto of "we aren't like them" and "we are different" and"you can trust us/we will restore faith in politics". They are doing nothing to convince anyone that any of those promises are being met - they are letting everyone down. u-turning on everything and are fast-tracking the doomsday scenario of a Reform government. Even the runway on the "it's all the Tories fault" is running out. I dislike politicians because they cannot be trusted and Rayner just highlighted that with ribbons on. She should have been so careful after the focus on the electoral roll issues she had with the house in Ashton-under-Lyne and then under a year later this comes up. Clearly the advice she took included a recommendation to take proper advice that she failed to do - that's just daft and the most galling thing is that she didn't just resign when this came up - she tried to spin out of it but must have known she was toast. Trust is fast being eroded. I desperately want Labour and Starmer to fix this because the alternative it too scary to think about but the way things are going they are fast-tracking Farage into No.10. Labour are letting us all down.
