Over 400 cyclists were injured in road accidents in Southwark last year, according to data from the Met Police – more than in any other London borough.

An FOI submitted by Accident Claims Advice revealed that 411 cyclists reported being injured in Southwark in 2024/25, including 111 serious injuries and 300 minor injuries.

The same FOI also found that 227 pedestrians were injured in road accidents in Southwark during the same time frame, including 2 deaths, 76 serious injuries and 118 slight injuries.

Westminster had the most pedestrian accidents (423) followed by Croydon (284)

I drove down to Lower Road and it is madness. Surprised no one has been killed yet. It worked well before why. Change it if it works. To justify the sill salaries

Yes lower road is madness, so many cars.

Lower road is awful. Cyclists in the cycling lane ignoring traffic lights cutting across both lanes of motor vehicles. Cyclists not in the cycling lane, not queuing with the traffic for traffic lights, and so being forced to overtake stationary cars in the now too narrow lanes by cycling on the wrong side of the road, into oncoming traffic.

It's a very poorly designed scheme that clearly took zero account of the way cyclists actually behave.

I'm glad there are lots of bikes.  I wish their were less cars.  I've used the road but not aware of any particular issue with cyclists

It would be fine if they stayed in lane and obeyed the highway code.

As it is, there are far too many putting themselves in danger breaking the law, which is unbelievably selfish.

Ask a pedestrian if they feel safer when crossing a road at red traffic lights or a zebra crossing between a bicycle or a motor vehicle and I bet you they would say a motor vehicle.  I sit at junctions and watch so many cyclists go through red lights its crazy. Last night a bus was going through the junction and a cyclist went straight in front of the bus coming from the side which was a red light, how the bus driver did not hit the cyclist is a miracle.. cyclists need to take more care and responsibility..

Just because someone does not agree with you does not make them wrong that is my opinion. The same as myself I do not think you are wrong in some of the things you say and also that is your opinion. For your information I used to be a cyclist and I used to ride through red lights , not have a light on bike when riding when dark or wearing a helmet.

Then you will appreciate the joy and benefits.  You most be aware that most on this forum post to complain about cyclists rather than promote riding.  Nature of social media that tends to focus on downsides, real.or otherwise.

But like yourself that is their opinion which is what you and they and myself are entitled to its called free speech and democracy . As long as nobody is threatening each other with violence then its OK.  That's my opinion . Just be happy that what you say is right and I will be happy with what I say is right and anybody else can be happy because what they say is right..

Looking back at the OP I'm not sure what the purpose of starting the thread was.  

(a)  This is dreadful, more should be done to protect the cyclists

(b) Cyclists and drivers need to use the road more carefully/responsibly

(c) Cyclists are menaces and it is their own fault

Always useful to have some views fro/in the OP of what their interest is  @ianr looking at your other posts they appear to be fairly considered so it would good to know your take

But what has happened is apart from me those of you who have posted don't like cyclists, some of you have made your points on numerous threads.

@tedfudge you wear your politics on your sleeve and clearly don't like the Mayor of London.  From this I expect that you don't like the measures introduced to increase cycling (and walking) although numerous initiatives were introduced by a Tory mayor and Tory PMs.

Whilst I have shared my views on Johnson numerous times (the damage that he did to the country); whilst his motives may be self-serving he did a lot of good for both cleaning up our air and for active travel.

What is the point of saying "those of you that have posted don't like cyclists". It is ridiculous, divisive and simply untrue. Talk about fanning the flames of the culture wars furnace.

Many who post stuff that makes you angry Mal are also cyclists. You know it too, which makes what you post even more offensive.

It's probably safe to say that the cyclists on here who regularly complain about other cyclists' behaviour, but continue to cycle, do so because, on balance, they see the positives of cycling. But God forbid that they should express an opinion that doesn't align with the doctrine.

There are some who just constantly complain about cyclists 

I'm well placed to criticise cycling standards.  And other road user standards.

But as regards to the former I'd rather look at the positives.  If which there are many.

This is quite old now, but it's an interesting analysis and I thought the final line is quite surprising
