Whilst I get your valid view and where you are coming from and Dulwich feels really safe.  I don't think violent incidents are so rare in all parts of London and beyond.

No they're not, generally London is becoming more lawless with less police and fewer and fewer police stations. Khan said he'd increase the numbers of police however the ploice commissioner said the opposite as the finances will not allow. Funny how the Mayor's proportion of the council tax was increased to cover policing but it ain't happening.

Recent data suggests a drop in violent crime.

Gang violence will make a significant contribution to the numbers.

Where are the police when you need them?

People want a police presence, they want to feel reassured by seeing them do what the word suggests, policing, so go catch some bad guys, arrest, charge and get the CPS to prosecute with the evidence to enable this to happen.

Stabbing and shootings are so common place they no longer even get reported in the public domain.

How many crimes don't get solved? Rather case closed and forgotten. The number of low to high level crimes which remain unsolved is staggering.  The criminal fraternity know this, they know they won't get caught so they just carry on. 

Biggest crimes which affect most people, probably are phone and car theft and tool theft from tradesman (massively on the increase), both are prolific and what do the police do, diddly squat. zilch, nothing, provide a crime reference number and the case is closed. Not good enough, not by a country mile.  

Met Engage? I don't think so.

As I age, I understand a lot more about community spirit and people’s fear in the current climate of going to the assistance of a person in need. Yes, this might in part be aged related but is also driven by not wishing or wanting to help but a combination of self preservation and yes, fear of what the attacker might do or even worse get stabbed or physically assaulted. 

Whilst it would be great to have more police presence to reassure community and hopefully act as a deterrent to people whose aim is to rob people or home and attack people, due to the cutbacks and not sure about my next comment but lack of police officers in general and reduce number of recruits, let’s face it - we as a community should step up to protect our community and assist police.

Years ago, I attended one of these evening meeting with the local police officers - turn out was less than a dozen local residents. Yes, was in the evening when a lot of families were dealing with homework, feeding, after school activities and obviously there are housebound people and older members of the community who understandably would not wish to come out. I believe that to address this, the church at the top of Barry Road near the library have over the last couple of years advertised  and organised day time meeting with two local police officers responsible for the area to address issues concerning the local community.

What  happened in daylight might as mentioned above been in part caused by an individual with possible mental health problems - the point is we should all feel safe on our streets in London and without doubt if you read the news, seems like stabbing, assault is now just the norm - a reflection of modern day society in any large town in the UK.

If memory serves me correctly, not related to assault but was not someone stabbed a couple of years ago near the junction with the organic shop? And I believe mentioned recently someone died in the local community from an assault.

Would be good to have an update from the police or someone known to the individual attacked. 

I was in East Dulwich just last week talking to a friend in Barry Road and was surprised to see two bobbies walking along the road in broad daylight so now having heard about the assault can only assume police presence has been increased.

There  used to be a guy I was very worried about and who indeed attacked a child and a lady. I’ve not seen him for a while.

In response to this several police officers were hurt at the Tommy Robinson march event yesterday.  150 thousand marched in support of the convicted criminal Robinson, many who have violent criminal convictions themselves and would support violence in pursuit of their aims.

And our right wing and far right politicians, celebs and influencers have all encouraged this divide in our community.

When I say more police presence, I meant locally, more police on patrol, not in unmarked cars and vans but on the street, willing and able to tackle and catch thieves, now that is their job isn't it?

March46, thanks for posting letter - and mentioning a comment I made.

Alice - Ilona started this thread to raise awareness of a police appeal to the local community. Think it was very nice to have taken the time  to make the community aware as we all live stressful and busy lives.

What has resulted is a discussion, opinions call it what you like with local members of the community on this forum mentioning what I personally think of  as this person over the months has been sighted. 

If to quote you in your last paragraph beginning “It’s a load of rubbish……. - all I can say, is I hope the incident never happens to you..this was nothing related to Robinson at all - but unless you live under a rock, you would understand the enormous pressure the Mets is under and what a great job they do. Just read the letter that March46 shared with the whole forum. And before you start off again, of course there are “bad apples” in all the forces - worldwide.

Not a huge fan of of Police.  The Met being the only ones I have ever had any dealings with.   We have all heard the headlines of the nasty rotten backsides in the force.  But who else would I call for help if needed it?

It seems we have to accept a certain level of crime as normal now… phone thefts, car thefts, parcels stolen from doorsteps…. they are just recorded as statistics. 
When it’s invasive ( numerous home invasions in my street recently), one reported on the forum recently, Evri delivery had his car stolen, the man attacked in PRP a couple of weeks ago, reports of violent and threatening youths also in PRP… it goes on and on. 
And now this poor woman brutally assaulted in daylight on a busy street.

NONE of this is acceptable. There should be ZERO tolerance for such criminal acts.

There is no denying the police have too much to deal with and not enough resources. It’s disgusting. It’s a misappropriation of public funds. More should be invested on our police force.

You can't have zero tolerance unless you live in a fascist/police state.  Sadly it is something you have to accept in a democracy.  There has always been crime, even in North Korea, the Soviet bloc, Nazi Germany, Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge etc.  

The discussion point is how big a police force we need and capabilities, punishment, and building communities.  And how much we are prepared to pay in extra taxation.

Even in the good (economic) times there is crime.  And crime under both Labour and Tory governments.

I do not accept that phone thefts and parcel thefts are just statistics.  Police have to prioritise what they do, we might not agree with it.  And most criminals are multi-tasking, moving to where the best return is considering the risk of being caught.

And there has to be a market, someone somewhere needs to buy a stolen product (I never buy off Gumtree).

Did you watch any of the series of Peaky Blinders?  This was a very popular series that glorified gang crime and violence.  Funny (ironic) that may enjoy films and TV that does this.  Although only the first series had any historical accuracy in it,  Criminal gangs were around before and ever since.

No, just no. 
Zero tolerance does not mean we expect zero crime but that we do not accept a standard level as normal and unavoidable.

For those who have suffered such “minor” crimes, myself included having had my house broken into,  it is clear from the lack of action that they are considered “acceptable”’.

Once small crimes become known to be ignored, it changes where and how we live.

I as a woman do not choose accept any violence against myself or my family.  I do not believe in a race to the very bottom!   It is OK to do more?  YES  We can all quote stuff but it doesn't take away the pain, fear or legacy of violence.  Stats will always say what ever they are meant to say.

That's simply not true. In New York, famously they introduced a zero tolerance policy and substantially decreased the incidence of crime. I remember a time when the UK police used to make arrests of shoplifters, even attend reports of such crime. Now they don't. 30 years ago the police used to respond to reports of burglaries. Now they just issue a crime number for the insurance. Indeed virtually  the only crimes it seems regularly responded to are thought crimes nowadays, which very much are the remit otherwise of totalitarian police states.

The quarterly SNT Police Meetings are advertised on EDF - the one Beansprout mentions, is  Dulwich Hill. The team have been short  staffed for a number of months as one officer was injured trying to arrest a shoplifter - unfortunately the shoplifter got away but the officer was left with fractures. We regularly see one or two of the police team around the Dulwich Hill area (they were recently in Landells Road) 

Dulwich Hill SNT are hoping to resume their Cuppa with a Copper sessions but are frequently asked to support colleagues policing the various protest marches.  The next Dulwich Hill SNT meeting is scheduled for December (date to be confirmed)

The attack on the young woman would come under the Goose Green SNT.
