Sadly crime does seem to be going up in terms of opportunists and street crime / bike thefts etc. Lack of CCTV in this area means it's more of a target than some neighbouring areas according to police (when they sent victim support round after our car had its catalytic converter stolen twice in 6 months by organised gang complete with balaclavas, iron bars and a chainsaw.. driving a 4x4).

Crime still relatively low by some parts of London standards but a worrying trend if burglars are trying their luck when people are actually home. Wonder what local police/ MP thoughts are in terms of whether they could organise more community policing patrols.

I read a woman was punched in the face on/near Lordship Lane in an unprovoked attack a week or two ago. Terrifying.

Whilst clearly 'a crime', I don't think this necessarily sits with the other things you have described. A tragic and awful incident certainly, and dreadfully traumatic to the victim, but not part of any 'crime wave' as such, I suspect. It's the sort of thing which, sadly, can happen anywhere (I, again, suspect).

This is an utterly foolish and alarmist statement, completely at odds with reality.

No it is not, it is a fact whether you like it or not. Do you feel safe on the streets, because I don't, do you go too central London, I don't as I don't feel safe. No one knows if someone is i) carrying a weapon or a knife and ii) you don't know what will trigger them to use it. So feel free to live in your bubble, but the reality is London is lawless and the police stand by and do nothing.

Also, as discussed on another thread, that particular  assailant was possibly (we don't know)  mentally ill.

Whereas I'm guessing most crimes locally are   committed for money, (ie things that can be sold, or in hopes of insurance money), food (if someone is really desperate, or to sell) or just pure mischief (like the recent goings on on Peckham Rye).

I'm a 76 year old woman, and I feel safe on the streets, and I frequently go to Central London.

If you seriously don't feel safe living here, why on earth don't you go and live somewhere else?!

It's absolute nonsense to say London is lawless, and it's absolute nonsense to say the police stand by and do nothing.

There will always be crime. It used to be cutpurses and highwaymen. And organised gangs of thieves. And people like Jack the Ripper.

Well good for you, I don't feel safe.

And saying why don't I go and live somewhere else is crass.

Yes London is lawless, open your eys and see the reality.

So you don't feel safe in London, but you don't want to live elsewhere?

What do you do, barricade yourself in your home and never venture out?

I have my eyes (sic)  open. Yes there is crime in London. That doesn't make London "lawless".

WoW Sue, all guns blazing.

No.

I'm just genuinely interested to know why you continue to live in a place which you consider to be "lawless", and where you don't feel safe.

Interesting turn of phrase, though, given your views of East Dulwich and Central London, "all guns blazing".

You quite happily fire from the hip "demanding" answers, how about taking a different tack and not making it personal.

It was you who  made it personal in the first place,  Jazzer.

You said you didn't feel safe in the streets,  and you said you didn't go to Central London because you didn't feel safe there.

So are you now saying that wasn't "personal"?

"Fire from the hip." Another interesting choice of words 🙄

I'm not "demanding" anything! I asked you some perfectly reasonable questions in  response to your own statements. None of which you have answered.

Never mind. It seems to be pointless having a discussion with you.

It's long past my bedtime. I'm going to turn on my sleep app  and go to sleep 😴💤

Here you go again trying to twist things saying I made personal saying I don't feel safe, but it's you firing and demanding answers, you're not the police and nor are you a moderator. No its not a reasonable question, nor is saying I should go live somewhere else.

You have a habit on here of "demanding" answers, not on.

"Firing"? "Demanding"? A "habit on here of 'demanding' answers"?

Crikey.

I didn't say you "should" do anything!

This is a forum.  For discussion. I will say whatever I like and ask whatever I like,  within the forum rules, as can anybody else

Please move your issues with me to the thread I have started in the lounge on feeling safe in London, because this is a thread about a burglary in Lacon Road.

If you continue to post your complaints about me on this thread, I shall not respond, so do feel free.

Or if you think I have broken any forum rules, do feel free to report me to admin.

Oh now you're coming over all defensive.

What happened to the nice Sue, because since the early part of the year your approach seems to have changed and you've become much more challenging. No you have not broken any rules and even if you had why would I involve Admin, that's a ludicrous thing to say.  Take care Sue.

    • That is also a Young's pub, like The Cherry Tree. However fantastic the menu looks, you might want to ask exactly who will cook the food on the day, and how. Also, if  there is Christmas pudding on the menu, you might want to ask how that will be cooked, and whether it will look and/or taste anything like the Christmas puddings you have had in the past.
    • This reminds me of a situation a few years ago when a mate's Dad was coming down and fancied Franklin's for Christmas Day. He'd been there once, in September, and loved it. Obviously, they're far too tuned in to do it, so having looked around, £100 per head was pretty standard for fairly average pubs around here. That is ridiculous. I'd go with Penguin's idea; one of the best Christmas Day lunches I've ever had was at the Lahore Kebab House in Whitechapel. And it was BYO. After a couple of Guinness outside Franklin's, we decided £100 for four people was the absolute maximum, but it had to be done in the style of Franklin's and sourced within walking distance of The Gowlett. All the supermarkets knock themselves out on veg as a loss leader - particularly anything festive - and the Afghani lads on Rye Lane are brilliant for more esoteric stuff and spices, so it really doesn't need to be pricey. Here's what we came up with. It was considerably less than £100 for four. Bread & Butter (Lidl & Lurpak on offer at Iceland) Mersea Oysters (Sopers) Parsnip & Potato Soup ( I think they were both less than 20 pence a kilo at Morrisons) Smoked mackerel, Jerseys, watercress & radish (Sopers) Rolled turkey breast joint (£7.95 from Iceland) Roast Duck (two for £12 at Lidl) Mash  Carrots, star anise, butter emulsion. Stir-fried Brussels, bacon, chestnuts and Worcestershire sauce.(Lidl) Clementine and limoncello granita (all from Lidl) Stollen (Lidl) Stichelton, Cornish Cruncher, Stinking Bishop. (Marks & Sparks) There was a couple of lessons to learn: Don't freeze mash. It breaks down the cellular structure and ends up more like a French pomme purée. I renamed it 'Pomme Mikael Silvestre' after my favourite French centre-half cum left back and got away with it, but if you're not amongst football fans you may not be so lucky. Tasted great, looked like shit. Don't take the clementine granita out of the freezer too early, particularly if you've overdone it on the limoncello. It melts quickly and someone will suggest snorting it. The sugar really sticks your nostrils together on Boxing Day. Speaking of 'lost' Christmases past, John Lewis have hijacked Alison Limerick's 'Where Love Lives' for their new advert. Bastards. But not a bad ad.   Beansprout, I have a massive steel pot I bought from a Nigerian place on Choumert Road many years ago. It could do with a work out. I'm quite prepared to make a huge, spicy parsnip soup for anyone who fancies it and a few carols.
    • Nothing to do with the topic of this thread, but I have to say, I think it is quite untrue that people don't make human contact in cities. Just locally, there are street parties, road WhatsApp groups, one street I know near here hires a coach and everyone in the street goes to the seaside every year! There are lots of neighbourhood groups on Facebook, where people look out for each other and help each other. In my experience people chat to strangers on public transport, in shops, waiting in queues etc. To the best of my knowledge the forum does not need donations to keep it going. It contains paid ads, which hopefully helps Joe,  the very excellent admin,  to keep it up and running. And as for a house being broken into, that could happen anywhere. I knew a village in Devon where a whole row of houses was burgled one night in the eighties. Sorry to continue the off topic conversation when the poor OP was just trying to find out who was open for lunch on Christmas Day!
    • We went to Chern Thai for lunch on Saturday, as we have done quite often, and they were closed, with no sign of life. The sign in the window still says Saturday 12-3, and there was no indication that they would be closed. Can anybody shed any light? We went to Chilli and Garlic on Zenoria Street instead. Their falafel salad bowl is amazing (and amazing value!) but we had been looking forward to a Pad Thai and a pint of Singha! ETA: I am reviving this thread because it is/was  specifically about Chern Thai's opening times!
