On Nov 1st  we have one long ride to Lesnes Abbey and a short one exploring Bermondsey.
Ride 1. Bermondsey Tour.  < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/bermondsey-tour-by-bike-tickets-1860285537119?aff=oddtdtcreator>  Bermondsey, the area along the Thames between Rotherhithe and Tower Bridge has been in the news recently. This year’s Stirling Prize has gone to a Bermondsey development. We will pass this on our route. Bermondsey has a long history. The wharves along the Thames were used to import food which in turn spawned food processing factories inland. The social history was interesting. Dickens describes Bermondsey as having the worst slums in London but in the early 20th century this area was a pioneer in slum clearance and social housing. On this easy ride we will pass the site of a medieval abbey, signs of tannin, a biscuit factory being repurposed and more. Start 10am in Deal Porter Square, opposite Canada Water Station, finish there 12 noon. 9 miles of cycling, frequent short stops, maybe even time for a coffee at the finish. Bruce leading. Route map with list of sites of interest at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1G-3W6xSCsWXFZPea5hSb5sd2yCSylZ4&usp=sharing
Ride 2. Cutty Sark to Lesnes Abbey.  < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cutty-sark-to-lesnes-abbey-bike-ride-tickets-1860216951979?aff=oddtdtcreator >  Meet at Cutty Sark next to the Foot Tunnel entrance. Start at 10:00am and will continue out and back, returning to Cutty Sark at approximately 13:30pm.  Mike K. leading. Route will follow the Thames Path and then round past the O2. From there will continue along the Thames Path past the Greek-inspired statues in North Greenwich and the Thames Barrier, eventually reaching Galleon’s Reach.  Galleon’s Reach holds historical significance as it was the place where the Princess Alice sank, costing 900 live in September of 1878. We will then join the Green Path towards Thamesmead murals and stop for group photos before proceeding on to Lesnes Abbey ruins for a coffee break. We will return by the Ridgeway path to Woolwich before joining the Thames Path again back to Greenwich.
Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. These rides are part of a regular programme of Saturday rides organised by Southwark Cyclists, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/
