On Nov 15th we have 2 rides, both starting at 10am at London Bridge. One is a long ride to Camden Market and the other a slightly shorter themed ride, Dickens’s London
Camden Lock – shops, markets, cafes, busy.  On a ride, normally avoid it.  However, it is a great destination – and lots of options for a coffee stop. Start 10am at Southwark Needle (south end of London Bridge, close to the station, SE1 2PF) with Amanda leading for an estimated 3.5 hour ride. Outward route along south side to Westminster Bridge, then Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, Marble Arch, Baker St, Regents Park Outer Circle, Camden High St. Return via Canal Tow Path to Kings Cross Granary Square, Cycleway 6 to Farringdon, up Ludgate Hill and past St Pauls.  Down to Cycleway 3 and if time loop over Tower Bridge and Tooley St back to London Bridge. Some roads with lots of traffic. But pretty much non-stop sight-seeing and photo-ops! Report from last year at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2024/ride-reports-16th-nov-2024/
A short quiz:
  • What’s so interesting about the Horn Tavern in Knightrider Street?
  • What family lived in Bleeding Heart Yard?
  • Where did Dickens live while his father was in the Marshalsea?
  • And why was he rude about Clerkenwell Green?
Ride leader John S. will reveal the answers on this 13 mile ride starting and finishing at the Southwark Gateway Needle on the south side of London Bridge.  Start 10am from London Bridge and head for Ludgate Hill and Fleet Street, before turning north for Clerkenwell via Saffron Hill. From there we return to Fleet Street via Gray’s Inn Road and stop for a coffee break at Aldwich. We cross Waterloo Bridge and follow Webber Street and Great Suffolk Street to Borough, and so back to London Bridge. Along the way we will stop very briefly to look at some places and buildings associated with Dickens.
Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. These rides are part of a regular programme of Saturday rides organised by Southwark Cyclists, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/
Note. Ride reports, often with photos and route maps, are posted to the Southwark Cyclists web site, Yearly index at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/.
