The follow-up London Assembly Transport Committee met yesterday to discuss what was causing the congestion in London. Some very interesting discussions - worth listening from about 58 minutes.

I got about an hour on from that and some key highlights thus far:

  • TFL acknowledging that traffic was down in London but competing road usage needs was contributing to additional congestion
  • TFL admitting that some LTNs are causing additional congestion
  • TFL being told reminded by the chair that every answer about congestion cannot be balanced by the response for the need for active travel
  • TFL talking about the downward trend in KSIs and then one Assembly Member saying how is it that the borough with the biggest drop in KSIs is Bromley, a borough where the 20mph limit is not in place - as clearly a leading question from the Assembly member and TFL said he would need to look at the numbers
  • TFL acknowledging that for drivers of private vehicles there will be a slowdown as they make more road space available for sustainable travel

Looking at the table in reductions Lewisham was only slightly lower than Bromley.  In absolute terms the outer boroughs have a lower KSI rate, perhaps less cyclists, less traffic per km, less pedestrians just wandering across the road, whatever.  Lots of data that 20mph reduces death rate so if outer boroughs adopted this they'd have even more impressive figures.

    • So are you saying that smoking these awful vape things are not harmful to someone’s health Alan? I think Sue’s reply to my question explains about how vapes are addictive and also contain very high amounts of nicotine which is the main culprit for smoking related deaths?   Can someone tell me how much a vape thing  costs?
    • I'm down about 50% in numbers and more in species since three years ago.  Not sure if it is the weather, continual building works, the quality of my feed or the pigeons and parakeets putting off others.  Good conversation on Winterwatch on feeding tonight, including issues with spreading disease. Three years ago, likely to see long tailed tits, dunnocks, song thrushes, corvids, wood pigeons. black birds, black caps. Possibles - redwings. Unlikely to see any this weekend, only blue and great tits, robin, goldfinches, bloody feral pigeons.
    • Thanks for the information about the wildlife group. I didn't know about that. And thanks to Sue for the links.
    • I got mine through the post with their mag  (I'm a member) but if you haven't signed up yet, you can download a printable guide from the RSPB website (you need to scroll down quite a way). https://www.rspb.org.uk/whats-happening/big-garden-birdwatch
