My son is now coming up to the big 17 months this month and we are trying to get our head round weekends in winter (we both work full time during the week, so he's in nursery)

The summer has been great - he loves parks and people, anywhere busy, so we've spent most of our time outside or (if wet) in various soft play centres.

Now I know we CAN go out in all weathers (we've kitted him out in full waterproofs already) but there might be weekends where it's just too awful and (to be honest) I'm getting a bit bored of the parks option (Peckham,Greenwich, Dulwich).

Our soft play options (Museum of Docklands, Deptford - never really liked peckham - ) are also starting to wear a bit thin. He's been walking for c.8 months now so I kind of feel like we've been doing the same old stuff forever...

Wondered if anyone knew of any weekend toddler groups that he might enjoy going to? Or any other activities that I'm just thinking of...that will keep him (and us) amused.

What about playgrounds - Goose Green, Brockwell Park, Ruskin Park - all have great playgrounds (admittedly weather dependent!). Horniman Sandpit also great.

Or Rascals at Bellingham Leisure Centre (Catford) - 15 min drive away or can get train from Peckham Rye - great soft play.

How about venturing into London? THe Science Museum basement is fab - my two love it. The natural history museum is also great. The Tate Britain do a thing called Liminal every weekend from 11AM for children and then you can take the tate to tate boat and head to the tate modern to run around (although it seems the little play area at the modern has disappeared).

Locally there is also Little Kickers at Jags sports hall - although for his age group trampolining might be better. I know my now 3 year old found it a bit overwhelming at that age. And Dulwich lesiure centre hae family swims at the weekend (I can't remember the time now) - I love swimming as for my two at least it seems to really tire them out.

17 months is probably a little young but I'm thinking of taking my 3 year old to the kids club at the Brixton ritzy on Saturday mornings this winter - followed by pizza at the Brixton market. My 16 month old will come too but probably won't enjpy as much as his brother.

    • They are. We are back to the same construction racket 8am-8pm every day for the whole of this week. The wall is one of the last things to come down, probably on Saturday. Then we can see how much of a mess they've made, especially the quantity of non-biodegradeable litter trampled into the earth. GALA 2025 - Production Schedule.pdf

    • @Rockets be a sweety and stop using the large font, it's annoying and I expect most can comprehend. Still not sure how this festival affects you.  Or is it a case that you just like taking on causes
    • It is intimidating looking through the book sections now.  I sometimes wonder if they're stocking bookshops' remainders. OTOH, when I put  some books out in a cardboard box for taking, it was  encouraging to see that a fair proportion of those taken were aged hardbacks.
