Help! Temporary home insurance during building works?

Hello,

Can anyone recommend a provider to cover our home whilst we have works carried out to the property?

It's also going to be vacant as our builders can't start work before Christmas and most insurers don't allow you to leave a house empty longer than 30 days.

We are meant to exchange today so urgently need to find a provider!! Any help appreciated.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Have you talked to your existing insurer? We moved out for 9 months of building works, but the Halifax agreed to keep our buildings cover in place during the works - with a couple of fairly straightforward conditions, and then they also extended separate contents cover for our rented accommodation. We had to send them details of the planned works and details of the builders' liability insurance first, but they were really helpful.

    • But when was it posted?! I haven't posted any this year. I can't bring myself to pay the exorbitant cost of the stamps. If I can't hand deliver them, I send e-cards. I know it's not the same, but it's very much easier. And as for the people who still send pages of closely handwritten letters .... very admirable in terms of the hours it must have taken them to write them,  but they remind me of those spoofs eg x has just passed all their many important exams with the highest marks possible, y has just walked round the world in a week, z has just become the first person ever to be knighted twice, we are about to fly off for our fifteenth exotic holiday this year ....... Or else (or sometimes and) they are full of who has had what illnesses and accidents and other catastrophes. Is this just my relatives and distant friends? Am I somehow attracting these reams of handwritten paper?
    • Oh, I didn't know that! I didn't move here till 1991 (I think) but the NCR incarnation must have been around that time? Unless my failing memory is even worse than I thought it was, sob.
    • I just googled, and apparently there's another branch of the Soho Street Govinda's  in Theobald's Road. I had no idea.
    • yes that's the one!  it was (nearly) harmless fun to get the un-initiated to put the coin in for you i also seem to remember that the Hanway Street place was called Govinda's.  it was vegetarian, vegan even - but it was much more palatable fare than the standard Hare Krishna stuff.  I also used to go tot he Indian Y - which I remmber discussing on the EDF some eyars ago.  And then the first Wagamama opened off Russell Street
