Adding another radiator

I am thinking of adding another radiator in my living room as even with the current one fully on, I feel that the room is not warm enough...

I know the average cost of radiator, but I haven't got a clue how much it costs for the installation.

I'm sure it depends on where the pipe is running, etc, but if I get it installed at the most convenient spot, it is quite an easy job that can be done in couple of hours?

How much should I expect to pay for the installation, less than 100, 100-200, or over 200?

Any advice would be appreicated!

It is not that straightforward and will take the best part of a day or more if there are problems.

The first thing to consider is if your boiler can handle an extra radiator. It could be that the reason

your home is cold is the boiler is already struggling with the rads. you have now.

You will need additional piping and by-pass piping so the water flows if the radiator is turned down/ off

This will inevitably involve taking up floorboards. / carpets removing furniture.

This will take a lot of time.

You will probably need to drain the entire system especially if the new rad. is downstairs,

This may be a problem if there in no drain tap fitted.

Draining the system takes time.. You will loose all your inhibitor which will need replacing.

Extra cost.

The radiator needs to be fitted connected up.

The system needs to be refilled and can take several hours to vent all the rads. deal with air locks

in the system and the boiler. The system may need re-balancing.

The system will need to be brought up to full heat and checks for water leaks carried out before

the floorboards can be put back.

You will need a plumber. a carpenter if joist need to be cut.

Would estimate ?400.00 - ?600.00 .. But could easily be more.

What sort of rad do you have at present?

If it's quite old and/or a single rad, you can get more heat output from a new double rad in the same position...

It's at least half a day's work, so at least ?300...but as Foxy says there are so many variables the best thing is to get some quotes.

Yes.. could be your rads just need bleeding.. might need to top up boiler pressure. (sealed systems)

You can do this yourself and will not cost anything. (well ?3 for a rad key.)

We changed an old radiator for a new more efficient one the same size at the bottom ( so not much pipework needed), but thicker with more fins to emit heat better.

A rather casual statement! As other posters have said it's not easy and there is a lot of work involved. I would charge about ?250 to do it.

I would however start with bleeding the rad to see if that makes a difference.

You know a good plumber who charges ?150 a day? Can you share his details please?

Our bedroom used to be very cold until we changed our knackered old radiator for a new, bigger one that emits around double the number of BTUs. We used Big Small Building Solutions who did an efficient, tidy job for a very reasonable sum.

Also, try increasing the gauge on the boiler that controls the temperature of the water going to your radiators.
