Hi

I live in a semi detached old victorian house. It has 4 double beds and 3 floors, with 4 adults living in it. Just been working out some bills etc as seems to be really expensive and have worked out that gas and elec combined is coming to between ?4.50-?4.60 a day for the last two months. This to me seems really expensive, what is everyone else's average use?

We had our heating and hot water on for 3 hours in the morning and 3 in the evening, we don't use our TV much but we all have laptops, plus usual usage of stuff like phone chargers, hair dryers, microwaves etc etc.

Would be interested to hear your views!

Looks like its time for you to switch to another utility supplier, go to one of the smaller suppliers, you'll be surprised at the savings you can make.

I'm paying 3.65p/KWhr for my gas on a fixed term deal till March 2015 with one supplier and 13.89p/KWhr for electricity with another supplier on a fixed term deal till June 2015.

Pay DD for both fuels from the same provider and you will get a discount. Better still, go to uSwitch etc and compare the providers' prices. Turn off the internet, TV, DVD, charges overnight and fit draught proofing around doors and in the gaps of the floorboards. Keep the upstairs heated only a couple of hours or so before bedtime, keep the thermostat to about 19C and you'll see a difference.
Those figures bloonoo seem pretty normal for that size dwelling and occupancy. It definitely can pay to shop around and also consider using a smart meter, whereby you can see which appliances are most energy hungry. It definitely pays to have low energy rated appliances where possible.

    • I don't know how it works now but my late parents had little money when they were retired (just state pension and they rented their flat) and they used to take their cat to the Blue Cross (In Victoria if I remember correctly) where treatment was free for those who could'nt afford a private vet. I sincerely hope similar is available still because for many elderly their pet is their main source of comfort and company.
    • In a couple of places locally, I have come across this. I am fairly sure that they attempt to do the bill in their head. If you just say , “no, I think it’s x” they start again and get to an agreeable number, or find a calculator. I don’t think it’s a malicious attempt to swindle people. Just not great arithmetic.
    • There are excellent charities like the Greenwich Wildlife Network who will help if you report any concerns with local wildlife. Foxes are wonderful creatures who had been forced into our town and cities and are just doing their best to survive, we should take care of them when we can.
    • Like I thought… prob like that for most of the day.. especially after people had walked their dogs, with friends, relatives  kids…
