The basic info in the document is quite valid, but it is rather badly written and will probably confuse a layman more than inform.

Amusing that the title is "10 steps...". They obviously thought of five more later.

I think the PDF is good advice.

There are a couple of good free antivirus/ firewall options. 'Comodo' is an excellent free antivirus and firewall. Some people recommend AVG too but I think Comodo is the best one.

And I also recommend 'Advanced Systemcare'. I have the pro version but the free version is very effective at not only keeping registries in good shape but in also keeping malware and browser hijackers out.

For Windows 7 and above, I think Microsoft Security Essentials plus Windows firewall is pretty good (and I'm not usually a fan of MS stuff).
