How do I get rid of wall clinging ivy without damaging brickwork?

Recommended Posts

I have a very rampant wall clinging ivy on both front and back of house which is going crazy. I do not necessarily want to get rid of it entirely but would like it sensitively cut back. It is mixed in with clematis which I would like to keep on front of house. Can anyone recommend a good gardener or someone who can manage pruning it back to restrict growth?

You will be constantly having the same problem if you keep the ivy.

As long as there are roots in the ground, it will just keep growing and going berserk, and you will be forever cutting it back (which far from restricting its growth, will just encourage it to grow more).

I had the same problem and eventually had to remove the ivy completely, much as I loved it. What KK recommends is a good idea to minimise damage to the wall. Unfortunately mine was painted and it's very hard to remove all those adventitious roots from a wall, even after they've dried out.

Depending on what kind of clematis is mixed in with it, that will be fine if it accidentally gets cut, it will just grow back.

ETA: If the ivy gets into your guttering etc, you will have an additional problem .....

    • The programme was brilliant and makes me wary now of sea paddling as so many areas affected. My daughter was working at a bank when privatisation of utility companies were floated. Bank advised its staff that only x number of shares could be purchased by individuals as Government rules at that time. She reported that certain people were seeking double and triple shares. Bank told her to ignore the guidelines as those customers had thousands of pounds in the bank. She was so disgusted at the banks attitude she handed in her notice, She decided that the financial world was too corrupt. Two degrees later - she now works in the NHS as an OT in mental health unit.

    • Petition Urge Israeli Government to stop law allowing execution of Palestinian prisoners The UK Government must act urgently to urge the Israeli Government to stop the proposed law which would permit the execution of Palestinian Prisoners, past, present and future. More details We believe that such a law would constitute complete violation of the Geneva Convention and International Human Rights Law. UN experts have called for these proposals to be dropped. We call on the UK Government apply considerable and substantial political pressure and the leverage of its international obligations to prevent the Israeli Government from passing this law.
