recommendations following our house renovations...

Hi, having just gone through a big house renovation I'd like to pass on some good trademen we have used.

Builders: Valdex; very good, came in on budget and early even tho we added more jobs along the way; happy to show the work they've done for us (gutted and redid 2 bathrooms; replaced water pipes from street all through the house; new boiler; new electrics; underfloor heating on ground floor; moved kitchen from one end of the house to the other.

Bathrooms: Bells on Lordship Lane, fantastic, after looking at CP Hart and 2 others I found Bells were able to supply most items at a good price and quickly! Very helpful and great with all my questions.

Kitchen counter: again Bells on Lordship Lane. They had the best price by far for quartz counters. Again Marc was very helpful & friendly, highly recommend going to them.

Sliding doors: from SKG in Bromley. They were great, friendly, helpful and did great job installing these amazing doors from Sunflex, made in Germany.

Material Plans: tile distributer based in Forest Hill. Very friendly & helpful too with supplying us with gorgeous tiles from Royal Mosa

Porcelanosa: gorgeous tiles from the showroom in Croydon (Purley Way); Gloria was very helpful!

The Natural Wood Floor Company: again another great company, fantastic product and a very good price.

Feel free to message me if you'd like more details but wanted to share this as so many people were so helpful when I was doing all my initial research.

And forgot to mention that Callows Locksmiths on Melbourne Grove were very good. We had them in first so forgot to put them on the list of recommended trademen : o

They gave good advice re replacing door locks and came and did everything very well and smoothly in a friendly helpful way, giving good advice on how to maintain the locks when all the building works started. A lovely local company!

Hi they are based in Ealing but work all over SE London. The main contact is Slawek and his mobile is +44 7793 540306.

They finish at ours this week so if you want to see their work let me know and if you want them to come and quote they are in the area this week. Call me on 07984 808 575 if you want more info or to see their work.

Hi, that's fine. If you wanted you could try the architect our previous neighbour used. He went to Cambridge with her brother in law and specialises in domestic projects, his name is Piuey and his numnber is 07980 302345. I was impressed with the job he did for them in Dunoon ROad SE23.

Hi wanted to add a couple of more recommendations for people we used.

DG Splashbacks made glass splashbacks for our kitchen and they were great. Best price I could find, family run business in Kent, friendly & good quality product. Highly recommend them.

Their website is dgsplashback.com and the number is 01580 753 879.

Garden labourer: Ricardo 07871 315308. We needed (very heavy ) paving slabs removed and our gardener recommended Ricardo. He was great. Friendly, polite, hard-working & tidy. He doesn't have a car so you need to provide the tools if necessary. I will use him again when we need to do more heavy work in the garden.

We had some work done to our house by Expert Builder & Decorator, excellent workers well managed by David. Also we are very pleased to offer details and recommend this great team of builders for everyone who need it for any refurbishment or decorating.

Call David - 07562716238 or 02036487153

Hi, I have one more recommendation. We used DGS Splashbacks for our kitchen splashbacks. They are based in Kent and specialise in glass splashbacks. They were very friendly, helpful (I wanted to explore several options), and well priced (less then anyone else I tried). Got the rec off of Mumsnet and it was a good one : ) I dealt with Paul English 01580 753 879. They also made us a glass tabletop (to replace one we had broken) and a pievce of glass to cover an internal window sill.

Hi just to say that we got Valdex back to do some more work (albeit on a smaller scale) and they were just as good as when we used them last year. Great builders - friendly, quality work, on budget & on time. The main contact is Slawek and his mobile is +44 7793 540306. PM me if you have any questions.

    • But all those examples sell a wide variety of things,  and mostly they are well spread out along Lordship Lane. These two shops both sell one very specific thing, albeit in different flavours, and are just across the road from each other. I don't think you can compare the distribution of shops in Roman times to the distribution of shops in Lordship Lane in the twenty first century. Well, you can, but it doesn't feel very appropriate. Haa anybody asked the first shop how they feel? Are they happy about the "healthy competition" ?
    • ED is included in the 17 August closure set (or just possibly 15 August, depending on which part of the page you trust more) listed at https://metro.co.uk/2025/07/25/full-list-25-poundland-stores-confirmed-close-august-23753048/. Here incidentally are some snippets from their annual reports, at https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/02495645/filing-history. 2022: " during the period we opened 41 stores and closed 43 loss-making/under-performing stores.  At the period-end we were trading from 821 stores in the UK, IoM and ROI. ... "We renogotiated 82 leases in the year, saving on average 45% versus the prior lease agreement..." 2023: "We also continued to improve our market footprint through sourcing better store locations, opening 53 and closing 51 stores during the year." 2024:  "The ex-Wilco stores acquired in the prior year have formed a core part of this strategy to expand our store network.  We favour quality over quantity and during the period we opened 84 stores and closed 71 loss-making/under-performing ones."
    • Ha! After I posted this, I thought of lots more examples. Screwfix and the hardware store? Mrs Robinson and Jumping Bean? Chemists, plant shops, hairdressers...  the list goes on... it's good to have healthy competition  Ooooh! Two cheese shops
    • You've got a point.  Thinking Leyland and Screwfix too but this felt different.
