Abusive staff who will actually SWEAR at you?

We've visited the The Rose (on 108 Forest Hill Road, SE22) for years, since it was the FHT. My, has it gone downhill.

The managing staff are very young, but that's not the problem. My sister saw one of the barmaids snorting someting in the garden! Yes, it was late & there were no kids, but still! Several pumps have been out of action for ages. This gone fortnight, I visited The Rose a few times, and EVERY time, I saw customers go to the bar and stand there while the bar maid faced the other way, hand on hip, chatting with her friends. The most amazing part is that her friends were the managers, & they were facing the waiting customers! So they could see them.

On the weekend, I had to pop in there and wait for a friend (I was willing to buy a drink), and it happened to me, unsurprisingly. The door swings, I walk in, but she (another girl this time) was perfectly happy to face the other way, while the young managers said nothing. Even though they saw me.

When I went around the bar to get the barmaid's attention, one of the other staff tried to get her attention but failed, as the barmaid now turned to me. This is when the other staff member gave me a real nasty look and said, "For f**k's sake!"

I am not joking! This was most distressing. It was the same girl that my sister saw snorting something in the garden. Girl with curly black hair.

Later I ended up at The Herne Tavern (much better pub, also on FH Road), & met an old friend who USED to drink in The Rose. When he explained why he no longer did, my jaw fell open as he reported similar experiences of extremely bad service. I also felt better, partly because I knew it wasn't just me.

These "people" do not know how to run a pub. Indeed, it seems they don't want to in the first place.

I just wonder how many others have had a similar experience. I know they are out there.

It's sickening, and at least six of us won't be going back there. It can't just be us.

Is the Tex Mex Menu "something for everyone" vibe not working there then. We were assured when they opened that we'd love the place

From the dodgy exterior decor to the equally dodgy sign, i've never been inspired to go in

Mind you, not sure i'd have attempted more than one visit

Surely the place is due for a "closed for renovations" sign anytime soon

*snorts (with derision)*

There needs to be, it's duller than dull in there

You'd think the old snortin' malarky had declined. Is there actually any cocaine left in cocaine these days, or is it something else they're snorting now ?

"It's that bad, and yet you went back a few times?

Interesting first post. The Herne has new management doesn't it?"

:-) Wonderful. But really, I chose to return there because I was temporarily low on options of travel. It was Rose or Herne, & I wasn't attracted to the latter (now I like it, I will return). Also, when it happened to others, it wasn't as bad. Bad as that sounds.

I promise you I'm not involved with The Herne :-)

In the recent Tulisa case, the cocaine involved was 37% pure. God knows what the other 63% is.

    • A bit of a long shot but I'm on the lookout for a portable pop-up counter or podium.   The kind you often see on a high street, used by charities or utility companies to advertise their wares.   I've included a photo to give you the idea. I'm a peckham-based artist and am looking for one for a free (and non-profit) community art project.  It can be in any workable condition and can already have signage on it as we will remove and redecorate ourselves.    Thanks in advance, Linzie
    • No I absolutely did not - that much is clear. Have you read the latest stories about Unite, Len and the hotel in Birmingham? The UK electorate were smart enough to reject a far-left party in 2019, let's hope they are smart enough to reject a far-right party at the next election too. If not we are all doomed.
    • I would also like to add my recommendation for James.  I had taken four names of electricians from the forum - in the order I had read the reviews.  First three no response - even days later. I phoned James this morning. He answered, gave me a time, stuck to it, messaged again 15 mins before arrival.  He fixed my problem on the spot.  Sensible charge out fee. Perfect service.
    • Most recent polls for the next election suggest it will be a hung parliament, with Reform the largest party by a fair margin. But that is predicated on Reform finding around 300 candidates who are actually electable. Given the number of Reform council candidates who have had to drop out prior to or after the local elections, does that seem likely? Social media is pretty unforgiving when it comes to finding skeletons in cupboards; a retweet or a like seems enough to scupper political ambitions. A few may defect from other parties, but do you think the electorate would really vote for so many brand new MPs from a newish party?  I'm not so sure.
