Phone Sockets

Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question, when I first had my own place you were able to slip a bt engineer a few pounds and he would run phone sockets all over your house, I think times have changed. Are there any other options to have another phone socket in my home or do I have to pay BT extortionate amounts of money to have this done?

buy a set of cordless phones .you get one master phone that coonects to the line and the others just have a charger so you only need one plugged in to a phone line .
