Jody Kruskal: The Goose Is Out! The Old Nun's Head, 15 Nunhead Green, SE15 3QQ. Friday 14 Nov 7.45pm. ? 7 on the door.

Floorspots welcome

Jody Kruskal sings vintage American songs and play tunes on the Anglo concertina. He is from New York City, yet performs regularly in the UK.

His concerts offer a warm and engaging solo presentation of traditional and popular American songs from yesteryear. From witty and humorous ditties to songs that explore the depths of the human condition, his singing tells American stories that are hilarious, gritty and true? stories of train wrecks and wrecked marriages, death row convicts and lonesome lovers, heroes, swaggering braggarts, lazy slackers and slapstick fools. Plan to join in on the chorus.

His love affair with the concertina goes back thirty years. He often plays at local New York contra dances with a number of bands. He has played extensively for morris and sword teams and also many Playford dances in NYC.

?What a refreshing sound!? ? Sing out!

?Brilliant concertina player? ? Vin Garbutt (see, he agrees with us!)

?Technical fireworks? exceptional skills? very exciting playing? he?s able to make the anglo-concertina sound like a mouth organ? bending and blurring notes, so that his playing could never be mistaken for that of an English or even Irish player. ? ? Rod Stradling, Musical Traditions

?Jody is an Anglo concertina virtuoso from the USA with a joyful, energetic & distinctive style; he?s a master of American contra dance, old-time and music-hall. He?s a fine singer. He writes stonkingly good tunes, too.? ? Lewes Saturday Folk Club

    • Hello! We are relocating abroad and so will be withdrawing our two children (ages 4 and 6) from St Dunstan’s College (Catford). If any family is considering enrolling children of a similar age, now would be an excellent opportunity—we’re required to pay full‑term fees unless the places are taken. Please get in touch if you’re interested or know someone who might be. Thank you!

    • Thanks for your reply. I’ve subscribed to Ancestry a few times in the past but felt I wasn’t using it enough to warrant keeping up the subscription.
    • Hi, I saw your post and just wanted to say that the incident you’re referring to did happen in the late 1980s at Dawson’s Heights. The person involved was named Carl Salawa, and he had just turned 18 years old at the time. Like you, I haven’t been able to find any news articles or official reports about it, If anyone remembers anything more about that time or incident, I’d really appreciate hearing about it. Thanks for sharing what you were told—it means a lot to know others remember.
