We are having works done on the house, scaffold up etc and a young lad with more front than dolly asked one of the builders to let him in saying we had asked him to come round to do some painting. He had a brush and paint pot and knew my name somehow. Although I shred letters I may have had a parcel with my name in the recycling bin.

Luckily my builder rang me to ask if I had sent anyone to paint and I told him no, don't let him in, but I can see how this could have worked in some cases especially on chaotic sites where there are lot do operatives who do not know each other and the job is not being managed properly. Reported this guy to local police but beware of these tricks.

I had this happen when I lived in W Norwood and was having a glazer work on my windows. Apparently some fella approached him whilst he was working on a bench at the front of the house and asked for entry (though he didn't know my name). Thankfully the glazer told him to sling his hook.

Must work a lot for it to be such a well-used con. What rotters!

    • Though it's often the big corporates who dig deepest. For small independents that's a bigger ask, decorating, when they do their own premises is cost enough. And we're normally happy not to have the big corporates in LL.

    • In my experience there is no fool proof solution to this with any company. Delivery drivers are people and people will make mistakes, cut corners, mis-understand instructions or simply not read them.  I've left instructions for parcels with just about every single company out there and at some point they've all screwed up.  I think the security camera is the best deterrent for thieves. In this case, my ring door bell spooked them off. I've just installed warning signs at my safe space to make it even clearer that they're being recorded. In the case that mistakes do still happen by the couriers, at least I know about it on the camera and can try to alert a neighbour if I'm not home.  Its sad that we have to turn our homes into fort knox with cameras but that's the world we live in.
