Probiotics for children - any recommendations, esp related to eczema and allergies

Recommended Posts

Anyone knowledgeable on probiotics? I have a (nearly) 4 year old with allergies and eczema, and I am trying to research the best ones to choose. Lactobacillus rhamnosus seems to have worked in a recent study, helping kids overcome peanut allergy, but seems impossible to find a brand with that strain, so I think I must be missing something. http://www.theguardian.com/science/2015/jan/28/peanut-allergy-researchers-say-they-may-have-found-key-to-a-cure

Up to now he has a probiotic kids actimel, topped up with 1/4 tsp of Kidzhealth probiotic powder I bought at the local chemist (as opposed to one specifically for his needs).

If anyone has any pointers that would be great.

Hi,

My partner uses a company called Optibac, she says there is a children's section that might be worth looking into. I will stick the link in below to have a look at.

All the best

Mark

I give my kids Udo's Choice Infant but for general well-being rather than anything specific, so not sure about specific strains to combat eczema. The health food shop on Lordship Lane stocks it and a few other brands.

Biogaia is great, look online. I used for colic etc (life changing) but I thinkit's the same one as you mentioned. Also great to give, a few tasteless drops and has vit D in too. Good luck :0)

My Mum is a nutritional Therapist and swears by Biocare vitamins and supplements. We have a children's probiotic in the range that our little ones love. Not sure if it has what you're looking for but all the best.

We use probiotics with our little one for the same reasons - allergies and eczema. We found Solgar ABCdophilis had L rhamnosus in its mix of probiotics. I've also started using Proven probiotics with multivitamins which has the combination of probiotics which was used in the Swansea Baby trial http://www.lab4probiotics.co.uk/the-swansea-baby-trial/

No miraculous rollback of her allergies but she's flourishing otherwise. Her eczema is much, much better but this may be down to avoiding the foods she's allergic to rather than the effect of the probiotics.

    • Ah sorry, it was comedy.
    • I have never used AI in my life. It's just notes from my forthcoming monograph on light industry in Dulwich and Camberwell 1879-1946 (dates chosen for obvious reasons).
    • Thank you, this really made me chuckle. It's like you met my brother as he would be the one taking more than his share. Plus the 'pikey' chutney is a winner. Unusual as in can't be identified??? Sadly I'm not the host otherwise I would definitely do that I regularly shop in the Cheese Block and am a fan. But as people have pointed out, there is no cheese shop that charges less based on bulk, so Aldi unusual cheeses may be what the familam receive! Yay, so I can get discounted mouse nibbled cheese still! Oooo, now I do love a Stinking Bishop. It actually offends my stepmum by it's stinkiness but luckily she is not one of the attendees at this particular gathering.  This is blooming genius. It's actually my partner who has the biggest issue with buying in plastic so I will have to hide the wrappers from him!
