Footballers wanted for: Community fun on Peckham Rye, Mar 1st (11am-1pm)

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Artist Sarah Turner is inviting you to take part in a filmed community event on Sunday 1st March in Peckham Rye for her documentary feature film ?Public House?, which was inspired by and centres around the Ivy House pub on Stuart Rd, and its recent rescue by the local community.

The event will see the creative energy from within the Ivy House flow out on to the streets to nearby Peckham Rye common, where we will re-imagine William Blake?s vision of angels through poetry, dance and movement.

- What is actually happening? What will I be doing?

Sarah is asking the local community to gather together en masse at The Ivy House at 11 am on Sunday 1st March, where we'll be providing complementary refreshments (tea, coffee, snacks - probably something like muffins). We will emerge from the building onto the streets, walking together as a group for half a mile to Peckham Rye common.

Once on the Rye, choreographer Wendy Steatham (her work includes the Olympics Opening ceremony) will guide us all through a simple movement that features in her swing dance classes. We?ll perform these steps together in synchronisation.

We will then light candles in jars, reciting a specially commissioned poem written by Jane Yeh (a 2014 ?Next Generation poet?), and wave little pocket mirrors to reflect light towards the cameras and into the trees.

The event will finish off with chot drinks and snacks at Caf? on the Rye.

The whole thing should take around two hours, and there is plenty more information here:

Which is also our sign up page where you can let us know you're coming (which would be really helpful with planning catering numbers!), but if you have any questions, please do get in touch here or on thepublichousefilm AT gmail DOT com. We're also on Facebook, Twitter and have our own site, which has more info about the project, our poet, the filmmaker, and some of the people who have already participated in other stages.

We're keen to get this information out to as many people as possible, so that no one misses the chance to have some fun on the Rye, so please feel free to share this with anyone you think might be interested!

Just a quick update to say that we will be hosting:

an informational meeting this coming

Wednesday 18th Feb at 7.30pm in the Ivy House

for group and community leaders, where we will be answering questions, giving out practical details, coordinating groups, that sort of thing. We'd love to see lots of you there!

Exciting news! Would you like to play in a football match on the Rye this Sunday?

Peckham Rye FC would like to play a match against the Ivy House team this coming Sunday, Mar 1st, c.10.30am. But the Ivy House team is missing a few players, so they're putting the call out for extras. No worries about experience as enthusiasm is much more important - it's a friendly match, so open to all levels of ability, and a perfect time to dust off those old boots in the garage and stretch your legs on the Rye!

If you want to play, email us at [email protected] and we'll put you in touch with the team :-)

    • Labour have changed a number of things overnight.   1. VAT on school fees - this has resulted in 25,000 moving until state education. 2. Increasing NICs adding billions to the cost of going to work. 3. Introducing the Employment Rights Bill causing employers to stop hiring. This and item 2 have added 100,000 people to the unemployment scrapheap. These are also causing businesses to relocate further harming the economy. 4. Scrapping all the small boats deterrents meaning 60,000 illegal migrants have arrived in small boats since they were elected. 5. Dishing out huge public sector payroses with no conditions so we have a massively increased payroll and doctors etc arestill going out on strike. 6.changed IHT and non domicile tax rules causing 16,500 millionaires to leave the UK and stop paying any tax here at all forever. 7. Alongside 6, leaving the budget up until an historically late period after the last budget has caused a house price crash, killing the market and decimating government stamp duty receipts. 8. Their profligate borrowing (£100bn extra in just one year) to fund all their lavish promises means the government can now only borrow at the highest ever yields on records. They are more beholden to the bond markets than Liz Truss was. 9. The rate of inflation has doubled under this government. It was a healthy 2% when they came in. For most of the last year, as a result of all of the above it is now nearly 4%.   These are all decisions the Labour government took that have immediate cause and effect.  Its no good harking back to 15 years ago. The current administration was gifted the fastest growing economy in the G7 and within 15 months they have destroyed it.    And things are only going to get worse this winter.
    • I use Autocar Repair in West Dulwich.. been using them for over 20 years. Excellent service…
    • A lot to agree with here - don’t get me started on Irish people complaining about immigration! - but that final paragraph is once again a cop out  there’s a lot of extreme right wing money stirring up the division that people are feeling - but there is zero excuse for handing power to these people. We live in a democracy and if we have enough people willing to give it up then judging those people foolish enough to do so is not only something that will happen, it is something that the rest of us should be morally compelled to do  if someone wouldn’t “normally” vote for a racist party yet somehow will do so because they hear someone like me saying that would be bad, then you better believe I’m judging them
