Garden clearing / 2 days work ?200

I have a smallish garden (back of terrace house) which is over grown but needs clearing back so we can lay turf down.

The job is to pull weeds out and remove the patchy/weedy/thin grass which is currently covering the ground. A path of paving stones needs to be pulled up also. The plants and trees as the back of the garden can be kept. We want the garden to be completely cleared with just soil left.

You won't need to remove the rubbish, we will do that.

Looking at 2 days work for 2 people for ?200 all in (the job must be completed within this budget)

We have a few tools - spade, fork, brush, trowl, small shears and large shears. I think you will need to bring some tools also.

Please PM if interested, wanting this done by the end of March.

I thought the same & would expect to get charged ?20+ an hour by a gardener to do that.

Hopefully the people who have contacted the OP are reliable and it won't prove to be a false economy.

?50 to each person per day for what is very hard work. Gardening labourers would generally get upwards from ?8 or ?9 per hour...

There is no doubt you will get some poor unfortunate person to accept your terms but it should be understood that an 8 hour day means you are offering well below London living minimum wage of ?9.15 p/h and still below the national minimum wage of ?6.50 p/h

You have even stated that they should have their own tools. If you take into account that travel and food for the day may come to ?15(unless they are local and can afford to live in ED on ?50 a day) I can't see any way they could afford the tools with ?35 left to live on....

Have you even considered what would happen if one of them hurt themselves while working on your garden or do you think ?50 a day will pay for insurance?

even though there is a lot of interest as you have said, I still don't think it detracts from the fact that this is exploitation at its finest

I genuinely hope the finished job reflects the amount paid

    • Hello! We are relocating abroad and so will be withdrawing our two children (ages 4 and 6) from St Dunstan’s College (Catford). If any family is considering enrolling children of a similar age, now would be an excellent opportunity—we’re required to pay full‑term fees unless the places are taken. Please get in touch if you’re interested or know someone who might be. Thank you!

    • Hi, I saw your post and just wanted to say that the incident you’re referring to did happen in the late 1980s at Dawson’s Heights. The person involved was named Carl Salawa, and he had just turned 18 years old at the time. Like you, I haven’t been able to find any news articles or official reports about it, If anyone remembers anything more about that time or incident, I’d really appreciate hearing about it. Thanks for sharing what you were told—it means a lot to know others remember.
