WHO IS IT FOR?

If you know how to use a sewing machine, have made a couple of simple projects (such as pyjamas, Miette skirt, cushions or bags), this workshop is the perfect next step into the wonderful world of dressmaking. It?s also great for quilters who are confident using a sewing machine but need a bit of help to start making clothes. If you haven?t sewn anything before, you will need to take our Make Friends with a Sewing Machine workshop first, followed by our Make Pyjamas workshop (or a couple of other practise projects) so you?re up to speed.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Take accurate measurements and understand sewing pattern sizing

How to make a cute A-line mini skirt using the Delphine pattern in Tilly?s book, Love at First Stitch

Constructing a waistband with a facing

Techniques for inserting an invisible zip

How to finish seams on your sewing machine using zigzag stitch

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING ALONG?

1m (x 150cm wide) or 1.3m (x 115cm wide) of medium- to heavy-weight fabric with body to hold the shape of the skirt, eg. denim, gabardine, canvas, drill or upholstery fabric (take a look at the right-hand column of the blog for a list of lovely fabric shops)

22cm (9in) invisible zip in a matching colour

We?ll provide thread, interfacing, tools and sewing machines for you to use. You?ll also get a goodie bag to take away with you, including a signed copy of Tilly?s bestselling book, Love at First Stitch (if you've already got the book, bring it along with you and we'll give you a pattern of your choice instead). At the end of the class we?ll toast your new skills with a celebratory drink!

Please note: It?s a good idea to wash, dry and iron the fabric before the workshop in case it shrinks. The skirt pattern goes up to 97cm (38in) waist and 120cm (47in) hips ? if you need a larger size please let us know before booking.

WHO IS THE TEACHER?

Zoe Edwards is the author of the sewing blog So Zo? Having graduated with a degree in Fashion Design, Zoe went on to work in the fashion industry in various roles. The distaste she developed for mass-produced clothing and production practices fuelled her growing passion for creating her own clothing by hand and she set up a now successful sewing blog that has an emphasis on sewing sustainably with style. Currently she teaches sewing, dressmaking and refashioning skills, develops her own sewing patterns and runs a regular contemporary craft market called Brighton Craftaganza. She's also the creator of the popular online challenges called Me-Made-May, which ask sewers/knitters/crocheters/refashioners to wear their hand-created clothing every day for a month with the aim of encouraging people to bring the DIY and handmade ethos into their everyday lives.

    • It’s a 4 year old on a bike do you really think he is going 15mph. Grown adults complaining about a child who probably isn’t able to string a few sentences together says a lot about the people in this forum. If this member was hit from behind the father was probably walking behind the bike so I don’t get the point of stretching out an overreaction from a child in Nursery bumping into you. Grow up Obviously a four year old should be cycling on the pavement.
    • Malumbu,  if none of us were there, does that mean that nobody should post anything on here unless they have witnesses from the EDF? Why would someone post something like this if it  wasn't true? This is not about whether children should or should not be cycling on the pavement. There are specific issues. a) the child was out of sight of the person supposed to be caring for him b) he appears to have been  either not looking where he was going or was out of control of the bike c) if he did see that he was about to hit someone  he apparently did not give them any kind of warning  d)  a person was unexpectedly hit from behind whilst just walking along, which in my view makes him a victim e) does the title of the thread really matter as the issue was described in the first post?  f) nobody is blaming the child, they are blaming the person who should have been watching him g) do you really think it was acceptable for that person to find the situation funny? The OP was not complaining about the 4 year old. They were complaining about an adult's lack of supervision of a 4 year old who was not capable of riding a bike and who hit someone from behind with no warning. Also, apart from reading the OP more carefully, perhaps also choose your words more carefully. Jobless? Lunatic? Charming.
    • Completely jobless and lunatic behaviour coming on a forum and complaining about a 4 year old and the child’s bike riding skills. Honestly grow up
    • I have to say, I too am upset about the passing of DulwichFox. He was a real local character, who unlike me, managed to stick with ED despite all of the nauseous yuppification of the last three decades. R.I.P to foxy    Louisa.
