"Unfortunately you don't have any such 'right' in the eyes of the law. So if you are protesting you can certainly expect the police to do all in their power to bring the streets back to a state of order.

as for inprisonment(sic) without due process, give me a break. You chose to take part in an unlawful gathering and so the police acted within their rights in this instance."

fuck me, Franco would have loved you.

If you are a protester then you should be allowed to do this freely and without interference from the Police. If you are a rioter or are seen to be trying to incite a riot then you can and should expect the Police to use physical force to deal with you.

Treble take.

You're proposing that due process be scrapped?

Well, you've a point, due process is for namby-pamby bleeding heart liberals after all. The police have proved that they never make make mistakes, or ever have anything but the most scrupulous intentions, so who needs courts for goodness sake. We'll soon put a stop to these trustafarian types, and remember if you do nothing wrong you have nothing to fear!

Due process means that the government respect the legal rights that are owed to an individual. In this country a person has a legal right to protest. A person doesn't have a legal right to riot. The Police are within their rights to make a clear distinction between what is a protest and what is a riot and to act accordingly.

Wrong place , wrong time , take the hit , shut ya gob.

if you want to be a front line protester , be prepared to be on the receiving end ( not always from the police).

I wanted to take some visitors to london around the city on that day , we had to change plans , that pi**ed me off , do the protester give a toss about me and my rights to walk around the city ... I dont think so... so I say F**K em.

batter them into submission and let the silent majority get on with their lives.

Big Phil whilst I have sympathy to your predicament on that day, I still think in this country people have a right to protest even if this causes a minor inconvinience to the general public. If the results of the protest are to the benefit of the silent majority then the protestors should be applauded.

Ah yes, Mockney, I too recall when more than two people together were deemed to be an illegal demonstration (there were no legal ones). And when when over a hundred people were shot by police with machine guns inside the cathedral in Vitoria for the sin of holding meeting about a strike. And that in 1976, after Franco had died and Spain was a 'democracy'.

In 1976 Spain wasn't even remotely a democracy, it was still entirely under the old regime, though nominally a monarchy at that time.

The transition to democracy (la transici?n) occurred between 1977 when negotiations for the new constitution began (adopted '78) and 1982 when it finally became a fully fledged democracy under the formerly banned PSOE.

This was a tricky period that needed clever and sensitive handling thanks to the likes of statesmen like Juan Carlos and Suarez. The ingredients at the time weren't dissimilar to those after the death of Tito and a renewal of war was a very real possibility.

I was even in Madrid in 1981 during the rather pathetic attempt at a coup by Tejero in the congress.

So I'm a bit lost as to your point. Franco was a good guy or Spain is innately wicked?

    • To be honest, pal, it's not good being a fan of a local business and then not go there. One on hand, the barber shop literally next door to Romeo Jones started serving coffee. The Crown and Greyhound and Rocca serve coffee. Redemption Coffee opened up not far away, and then also Megan's next door to that. DVillage was serving coffee (but wasn't very popular), as was Au Ciel (which is). Maybe also Heritage Cheese, I don't know. There's also Flotsam and Jetsam doing coffee and sandwiches at Dulwich Picture Gallery in the other direction. The whole of Dulwich Village serves coffee. And yet on the other hand, there are enough punters to support all good coffee shops. With the exception of Rocca and Megan's (which are both big spaces) and C&G (which does coffee like everything else - slow and with bad service), all these places regularly get queues out the door. Gail's often has big queues and yet very few people crossed the street to Romeo Jones (which was much better)... Half the staff at Gail's are perfectly fine and efficient. The other half are pretty offhand and rude. It's certainly not welcoming or friendly service. But they're certainly hard working, and no doubt raking the money in for Luke Johnson...
    • Well according to a newspaper article, Gail’s is opening 10 shops in London,,, yup Dulwich is named 10/5 I seem to recall with others in London opening at 7 am…!, Guess that is to capture workers coming off all night shift. Offering free mince pies until they run out.. So very sad to hear about Romeo Jones… been a customer since the opening, any idea where Patrick has gone or details… please pm me.    What is going to be in its place…. Will be around in Jan…umm village is changing….
    • interesting the police said "the car was in demand at the moment" what make/model is that?
    • Just be careful to know exactly what they cover and the limits. i use Many Pets and Medivet, as I think one of the vets is exceptionally good. Some of the NHV are, but I’ve had a couple I’ve not liked at all.  I need consistency and to feel that they actually care more about the animals than the money.
