ok i change my 4 foot fence with trellis to 5 foot with trellis because thinking about it 4 foot is low even for a shortie like me. I visitied my sister (who not out of choice has a 4 foot fence) once and her neighbour is approx 20 stone and she was wearing a tiny bikini and it was impossible not to stare.

I also agree with skidmarks but sadly not many people have front gardens, especially in london.

Before I moved to The Suburbs 26 years ago I had been brought up in Council Flats where the people were very sociable (apart from the Guy who murdered someone, immediately below us (he wasn't quite so pleasant:))....

It was customary to chat to ones neighbours over our Balconies and I've been lucky with the 10 different neighbours I've had, in total, on both sides, since I moved in 1983 to Bexley.

My garden is completely open on one side, with chicken wire and had 2 x 6 ft Panels (now 3 x 6 ft) on the other side for a little initial privacy on the other side.,

We would hate being "imprisoned" in our Garden, particularly, as I spend a great deal of time there, along with our 4 West Highland Terriers...:)...

The front garden has a 8 ft high hedge which has the great effect on closing off my front house which I prefer (at the front) and I share a large front area with my neighbours, who are a very friendly young couple, onthe other side.

    • I'd try the Dulwich Village or "North Dulwich Triangle" forums for more local knowledge but I don't think those areas compare to Abeville Road at all. It will be quite a different lifestyle.
    • Yes, Dulwich Village commands a premium and justifiably so given access to the City via London Bridge plus the top rate schools within walking distance.  The bus services are really good also - 37, 42 and P4. The P4 is useful for connecting to the Victoria line at Brixton. It's worthwhile waiting for the right property. I know of one which will be coming on the market in a few weeks - 4 bedrooms and south facing garden circa £2.5m.
    • This is an utterly foolish and alarmist statement, completely at odds with reality.
    • I realise this is highly unlikely, but if anyone has a colour laser printer in very good working order, I'd be delighted to take it off your hands!
