Job opening: assistant/manager, new cookery school

Recommended Posts

I am recruiting for a London Barbecue School. Any questions, please feel free to shout!

The Business

London Barbecue School (www.londonbarbecueschool.co.uk) is a new project for 2015 by School of Food (London?s travelling cookery school, operating since 2010). We offer outdoor cookery classes at our purpose-built venue in Peckham, cooking great ingredients on a range of barbecues and smokers. Our classes fall into 3 categories: serious barbecue classes (focusing on techniques, certain types of equipment, beginners); more relaxed, fun barbecue classes (learn to cook a menu, eat together - effectively a cross between a supper club and a cookery class); and private events and classes for parties and corporate groups. Classes predominantly take place on weekday evenings and weekend daytimes.

The Position

Sometimes assistant, sometimes manager - the person who does this job is in charge of keeping the show on the road. You will be responsible for assisting tutors before, during and after classes; with their preparation, ensuring they have everything they need to teach effectively, and with cleaning up during and after classes. A willingness to get your hands dirty (not a metaphor) is essential!

Outside teaching hours, the role entails general management of the school: ensuring the site is operating efficiently, effectively and within health and hygiene regulations. This will entail working with suppliers to ensure we have everything we need to teach great classes, liaising with customers about their class bookings; and working with other staff. This part of the job requires a proactive approach, initiative to see where your work will most assist the operation, and flexibility to adapt to a business that is likely to grow and evolve rapidly during its first months.

Experience of working in a food business is desirable; a strong interest in food is essential and barbecue cookery and teaching experience are both highly desirable. Experience of HACCP and overseeing food safety processes are also desirable.

The job will start as a part-time position, on an hourly rate. If the candidate and the business are successful it is likely to lead to a full-time position, with the possibility to become increasingly involved in shaping the future of the business. In either case, this is a seasonal position, until the end of October.

We are equally open to applications from people of all ages, nationalities, religions, genders, sexual orientations etc but it is essential you speak fluent English and can legally reside and work in the UK.

How to apply

Please apply with a covering letter and CV to contact [at] londonbarbecueschool [dot] co [dot] uk, paying particular attention to any experience that is relevant to the requirements and desirable experience mentioned above. Whilst we appreciate enthusiasm, please pose any questions and apply by email and DO NOT telephone our office.

    • While they struggle with economics of UK plc, collectively we all suffer as a result of their ineptitude.
    • I’ve tried to find details of surgeries being held before but not found any. The section of the Southwark website that details councillors’ surgeries says that: Your locally elected Councillors will be holding a roving surgery programme in the Dulwich Hill area to enable residents to raise any local issues. Residents will be notified by letter in advance of the date, time and specific streets/roads where the surgery will take place.  Surgeries are not held in August, on Bank Holidays, Easter or in Christmas Week.  Dulwich Hill Ward Councillors I’ve never seen any notification of surgeries being held, including on the DH councillors’ social media accounts. I don’t know if any other residents of Dulwich Hill have? Neighbouring wards all seem to have times and places posted for surgeries.
    • I wouldn't feel too bad about that. It's one of the few degree areas that you can do a BA or a BSc in, so it's a fairly wide-ranging and complex subject. Certainly Truss, Kwasi and Reeves seem to struggle with it.
    • I can't access the article - what's the gist?  I took the markets getting jittery when she was crying at PMQs to be a sign that they trusted her. But maybe it was because they were simply worried about any form of instability.  The NIC hikes have stymied the economy, which we could all see a mile off. Will a wealth tax improve things? Does anyone here think the trickle down has any impact and that chasing out the super rich will help things? Or are we just seeing off the biggest contributors to the economy? And has the Kwasi approach ever worked anywhere else?  Economics is not my strong point at all, I'd love to know others' opinions, but it seems to be she has few options, especially as the party is so divided.
