I am dusting off my cello after 20 years or so of not playing.

Any recommendations for the following?

Someone to have a look at the sound post which I think has slipped a bit.

A local teacher - I was grade 8 standard and would like to get back there and work on my technique.

A localish orchestra

Thanks in advance.

Hi Oxalis

I would highly recommend as a luthier Anette Fajardo in Honor Oak, on 07950 399 439. Lots of professionals take their cellos to her and she is a thoroughly nice person and charges reasonably. For teachers there is Kim Mackrell on Scutari Road who has worked as a professional orchestral and chamber music player as well as a teacher. Even if you do not go with her as a teacher, make sure you get on her Chamber Cellos mailing list for fantastic cello ensemble courses, some in St Stephen's Church Dulwich over a weekend and some slightly longer residential courses in beautiful settings around the country. There is a Chamber Cellos website which gives Kim's details and details of courses. Another great teacher is Gwyn Pritchard (has his own website) who teaches in Camberwell but I do not know if he is taking on new students at the moment.

Good luck with the playing and hope to see you on a course!

I have used his services on several occasions now and I am always impressed by 1) the speed of his response,  2) his honest pricing,  3) the quality of his interventions.  I had a washing machine crisis the other day where my old appliance started leaking badly and into the flat below.  Aria can within an hour of my call and sorted the whole thing immediately.  Impressive! • Capita (always spelt in Private Eye as Crapita) has a record of failure in its management of public contracts that goes back decades. Yet they continue to get more government business and have our money lavished on them. Private profit trumps public service every time.
    • Perhaps the robbers pulled over for a Magnum? A 25-year old Ferrari is probably worth a lot less than many newer cars on the streets locally (£40k-ish, I’m guessing?). I notice the tax is up in a fortnight.
