Mexico - any top tips, places to go and see?

Me and Mrs Mark are thinking of heading to Mexico in October, probably flying to Cancun and heading off down the coast for a couple of weeks. So far we've only been told to avoid the American high school holiday period, I've a Lonely Planet book in the post but was wondering if anyone's got any interesting recommendations they'd like to share.
