if you banned private schools some people would band together and home educate/tutor at home etc. The affluent and most determined will always find a way.

Dear fruitcake, whichever option you choose, then it might be a good idea to try to introduce activities that help your child to mingle with the 'other half' of society. For instance, if you send them to private school, maybe they could also attend a community youth club in your local area. Or, if they attend your local state school, then maybe they could go to privately-run junior rugby/horseriding/drama lessons. This will help them to develop the social skills they'll need as they grow up - whatever path they eventually choose in life.
